Position Summary

We are growing our team and seeking an entrepreneurial Donor Communications Director to join the Investment team. This position reports to the Senior Director of Investment.


In this newly-created position, the Donor Communications Director is principally responsible for developing and executing on effective communications strategies for fundraising, cultivation and stewardship of Rewiring America’s institutional and individual donors and prospects. The Donor Communications Director is critical to strengthening our relationship with existing and potential funders, and unlocking the funds needed to power Rewiring America’s work in the years ahead.

What You’ll Do

Create a Donor Comms Strategy

Serve as Driver/Owner of: 

  • Rewiring America’s Case for Investment 
  • An Investment Team Editorial Calendar that motivates current and prospective funders to deepen their support
  • Fundraising toolkits, universal proposal elements, talking points, FAQs, and shared Donor Communications resources

Produce Materials for Donors

Create compelling donor-facing materials, including: 

  • Rewiring America’s annual report
  • Narratives, visuals, and financial materials for proposals and reports to individual and institutional funders
  • Calendar- and Lifecycle-based stewardship, fundraising, acknowledgement, and cultivation messaging using the most appropriate media and channels 
  • Event communications such as invitations, programs, speaker talking points, and follow up messaging 

Collaborate and Manage Donor Comms 

  • Project Manage a portfolio of projects requiring input and contributions from a variety of stakeholders throughout the organization.  
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the interests and expectations of the organization’s major funders and proactively seek program information to cultivate major donors based on their interests. 
  • Partner with staff from across the institution to manage the collection of program input and other information about the organization, our strategies, and partners. 
  • Proactively identify compelling content and transform complex material into highly readable stories.
  • In collaboration with donor relations colleagues, develop an internal repository of information that reflects institutional priorities and fundraising goals for the use of the team and donor relationship managers. 
  • Collaborate with the Creative and Communications teams to ensure alignment around the organization’s comms strategies with respect to donor audiences.
  • Collaborate with relationship managers and program and Finance staff to prepare financial documents including proposal budgets, grant expense reports, and budget and expense report narratives. 
  • Apply Rewiring America’s style guides, basic graphic design principles, and personal creativity to advance the visual presentation of donor communications, seeking opportunities to use photography, infographics, data visualizations, and other imagery as appropriate. 
  • Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping around deliverables for internal future reference.

The Donor Communications Director joins a lightweight, nimble team that operates with a sense of urgency and a track record of success. The Donor Communications Director must have:

  • Excellent writing, editing, verbal, and visual fundraising communication skills, including the ability to express a range of voices and styles for varied projects with diverse audiences. 
  • Superior organizational skills, including the ability to—with a great deal of creativity and independence—manage the timelines for, communications around, and production of multiple projects simultaneously while working with numerous partners to achieve high-caliber final products. 
  • Familiarity with philanthropy, environmental issues, the energy sector, or related sciences. 
  • Ability to synthesize and describe complex scientific, legal, and policy-related subject matter in clear, concise language and present persuasive rationales for philanthropy. 
  • Collegial, responsive team player able to work well with diverse internal and external constituencies in a fast-moving organization with evolving roles. 
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with project budgets and financial reports.  
  • Able to work effectively and maintain composure and flexibility under pressure.

Requirements

The successful candidate demonstrates enthusiasm for making electrification easy, and models excellence and integrity in all they do. The selected candidate will also possess the following Core and Preferred qualifications and characteristics:

Core

  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience writing for a high-volume non-profit development department or private sector equivalent.
  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Rewiring America.
  • Collaborative work style.
  • Facility with technology to support remote team work.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent references demonstrating a strong track record in collaborating with diverse stakeholders to produce creative projects.
  • Content knowledge in climate, renewable energy, and/or building electrification.

Benefits

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000 USD, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Rewiring America is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. 
  • Full Time Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 24 hours of volunteer leave annually. 
  • Employees will also receive 11 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (13 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). 
  • We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. 
  • Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment. 
  • We offer access to professional development resources including up to $2000 per calendar year to use towards your growth and development.
