The Business Development Manager is responsible for performing critical business analysis related to sales strategy and key photonics markets/applications. This role will analyze and report on key business opportunities, developing strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including customers, market analysts, sales, marketing, product development and internal leadership teams. This role will require strategic and analytical planning to drive leadership development to a variety of sales and other business areas.  

Although the location of the position is in Rochester, NY, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations. Salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000 annually.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Performs cost analysis across global sales and technical service teams to better understand areas for improved operational efficiency and growth.
  • Support Account Managers as subject matter expert for optics product line.
  • Stay closely connected to key applications and market areas to act as voice of customer to internal sales, marketing and product development initiatives.
  • Work closely with Sales Operations to establish, enforce, and improve team efficiency, effectiveness, and reporting.
  • Work closely with the Director of Sales in creating future business development opportunities and sales strategy.

Physical Activities:

This is largely a sedentary role. This may require the ability to lift, bend, or stand as necessary. The employee may occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience with optics and/or photonics systems is required.
  • Experience in technical sales, strategic marketing, or a related function in a photonics/optics manufacturing organization.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics or business or a related field; advanced degree preferred

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of sales process and best practices - preferably within a direct, B2B inbound/outbound sales environment.
  • Exhibit a high degree of motivation, energy, and creativity working in a fast-paced organization.
  • Experience working with sales management and lead generation software tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfortable building presentations and presenting to senior leadership.
  • Advanced MS Office proficiency: especially Outlook and Excel, Expert proficiency in Excel, ERP/MRP systems or CRM is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work under time constraints.
