Summary:
The position serves as a Cataloging Technician for the Collections Holding and Inventory Improvement Project (CHIIP), located at the Library of Congress. The position reports to the Project Manager and performs technician duties for cataloging and distribution of the collections, including serials and monographs.
Duties:
- Performs searches of various databases and files to locate and/or verify bibliographic data in support of various library functions for cataloging. Efficiently searches online databases, such as the ILS and OCLC, to locate records for material in hand. Recognizes the need for appropriate alternative search strategies to locate records.
- Performs copy cataloging for a variety of materials and formats in an automated cataloging environment. Searches entries in automated and manual catalogs. Assigns content designation on newly created and updated bibliographic records. Performs database maintenance including modifications, updates, and corrections. Creates and revises bibliographic records, including initial bibliographic control records.
- Shelf lists materials independently, adjusting procedures as needed. Consults the shelf list or the appropriate classification schedule to verify whether the class number assigned is consistent with the subject heading(s). Learns to identify possible errors in the cataloging process and then consults with senior personnel before correcting the problem.
- Distributes materials to the appropriate off-site location designated by The Library of Congress.
- Uses automated tools, such as macros, to process titles. Enters data related to production into statistical or management databases and runs reports as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- This position will work a fixed work schedule (40 hours/week).
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Library Sciences or equivalent required; Masters in Library Information Services or Masters in Library Services preferred.
- Knowledge of library collections maintenance practices and procedures.
- Experience in cataloging serials is required.
- Knowledge of proper library collection retrieval processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of best practices for the preservation of collection materials.
- Ability to interact collaboratively with others.
- Ability to use computerized search tools, web-based tools and online databases.
- Ability to meet or exceed daily goals.
