Full Job Description
ARETUM, a leading government contracting company specializing in technology-enabled mission support services, is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable USDA NAL Collections Librarian to join our team. As a USDA NAL Collections Librarian at ARETUM, you will play a crucial role in managing and curating the Smokey Bear Collection at the National Agricultural Library (NAL).

Responsibilities
- Organize, describe and create/update finding aids for unprocessed subsets of the collection.
- Create ArchivesSpace records for items in unprocessed subsets of the collection.
- Prepare physical materials for digitization; coordinate production of in-house and external digitization; and collaborate with digital archivists to preserve and present the digitized content
- Assess potential donations to collection and recommend whether to accept.
- Prepare documents needed to transfer or add collection materials; and update collection administrative files to reflect changes/additions.
- Accession new materials into the collection and update finding aids to reflect additions.
- Assess collection usage by monitoring researchers in the Special Collections reading room and answering customer information inquiries regarding collection.
- Prepare for and participate in tours and outreach; create displays of representative items from the collection and associated talking points.
- Assess condition of materials on traveling exhibit and initiate repairs where needed.
- Develop curatorial strategy for licensed materials.
- Develop advertising policy for the NAL Smokey Collection as the official repository.
- Add new content to web archiving of Smokey Bear websites as needed.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in library science and previous experience working in a special collections or archives.
- Professional experience and knowledge of the principles and practices of archival administration, description, and arrangement, and familiarity with current developments in processing procedures.
- Demonstrated expertise using Archives Space archival management system to describe collections and digital objects
- Project management: coordinating complex projects involving disparate stakeholders to meet deadlines and produce deliverables
- Demonstrated experience using an integrated Library Service Platform for digital object management
- Subject matter expertise related to the U.S. Forest Service’s Smokey Bear character and outreach campaigns and the related licensing/access issues.
- Familiarity with library bibliographic records, the ability to interpret MARC records and experience working with research library collections
- Ability to lift and move books and manuscript boxes, to climb ladders to retrieve materials and to push book trucks.
