Full Job Description

This is a fully remote role for candidates who are based outside of the New York Metropolitan area. For those located in the area, we encourage you to consider our hybrid work arrangement (1-2 days a week in our NYC office). At Convergent Energy and Power, our mission is to make the electrical grid cleaner, more reliable, and less expensive by leveraging state-of-the-art energy storage and distributed generation technologies.

The Pre-Construction Engineer will perform development stage engineering and project management, optimize our systems, develop standards, and mentor staff within the distributed generation and utility-scale markets. This role will exercise leadership skills and provide different perspectives on issues to support design engineering and pre-construction project management. The Senior Pre-Construction Engineer will be supported by the internal engineering staff including civil, structural, and electrical engineers, and will manage external engineering support for PV & Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) design.  

What You’ll Do

  • Design projects according to Convergent Design Standards and understand and improve the functionality of company design tools to create 10%, 30%, and 50% design packages. 
  • Manage several complex projects across verticals (i.e. different regions and different technologies) utilizing lean management concepts and critical path scheduling 
  • Anticipate challenges with complex projects and establish proactive approaches to address risks, challenges, or uncertainties. 
  • Work with the project teams in evaluating and performing feasibility analysis on potential sites 
  • Collaborate with external vendors for outsourced deliverables and feasibility 
  • Assist in the improvement of design engineering tools and software to serve current and future business needs based on technical and business knowledge. 
  • Support Pre-Construction and adjacent department team members to successfully navigate challenging projects through the effective use of software and tools. 
  • Understand how business goals translate to engineering goals and work closely with Technical Leads and Convergent leadership to ensure project work meets Company and Team goals. 
  • Lead design engineering improvement initiatives that support company-wide strategy deployment efforts 
  • Be a mentor to less experienced team members, expanding their technical knowledge and business awareness, reviewing their deliverables, and supporting their professional development broadly. 

Requirements

Required Qualifications 

  • 4+ years of experience as an Electrical Design Engineer, or similar position, working with and leading engineering projects. 
  • 2+ years of experience designing PV and BESS.   
  • Ability to Project Manage and lead a project team through the development phase of standardized projects  
  • Intermediate in project scheduling  
  • Beginner to intermediate level of project costing/ budgeting experience  
  • Knowledge of national electric and building codes. 
  • Intermediate understanding of system design, products, engineering, and optimization concepts for PV and BESS systems ranging from 5MW AC to 50MW+ AC.  
  • Intermediate ability to project manage and design multiple projects, coordinating the efforts of multiple stakeholders, including internal stakeholders, vendors, customers, utilities, permitting authorities, and professional engineers and disseminating that into a comprehensive critical path schedule 
  • Intermediate proficiency with industry software (e.g., AutoCAD, PVCase, PVSyst, PVBid, Salesforce, MS Office Suite, or reasonable equivalents) 
  • Intermediate written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excitement about growing along with a fast-paced, dynamic company; comfort with ambiguity and a willingness to build, experiment, and iterate when the path forward is undefined. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred.  
  • NABCEP Certification a plus. 
  • Experience in both behind the meter (existing infrastructure) and mid to large scale greenfield Utility-scale PV and BESS development (100+ MW) experience a plus. 
  • A passion for renewable energy, addressing the climate crisis, and accelerating clean energy transformation.

Base Salary Range: $120,000- $135,000; Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience.
