The company began in 1996 with just 28 seed varieties but has grown into a thriving business community whose efforts make organic seeds available to home gardeners and commercial growers across North America. Today we offer over 700 heirloom, open-pollinated and hybrid varieties of vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower seeds to our customers. We believe in a deeper understanding of how re-built food systems can support health on all levels – healthy environments, healthy economies, healthy communities, and healthy bodies.

Position:

As an Accounting Manager at High Mowing Organic Seeds, you will play a vital role in the continued success and growth of our business. Reporting to the CEO, you will be a key member of our leadership team and will collaborate with staff and partners to help them succeed. You will be responsible for accounting, business and financial analysis, and identifying opportunities to improve financial management, as well as for payroll and benefits administration and basic HR functions. You will supervise two (2) accounting staff members. The company is located in Wolcott, Vermont, and this position can be fully remote.

 Accounting Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all bookkeeping and ensure consistent accounting practices and accurate reporting to include AR, AP, bank deposits and account reconciliation.
  • Prepare year-end closeouts and materials for tax and audit firm.
  • Review financial reports for accuracy and consistency and make correcting entries.
  • Manage cash flow and oversee collections.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports and help identify opportunities for performance and process improvement.
  • Maintain relationships with outside service providers, including tax providers and benefits brokers.
  • Administer payroll & benefits for approximately 60 employees.

Human Resources Responsibilities

  • Ensure that documentation of employee status and categories (part-time, full-time, regular/seasonal, hourly/salaried, exempt/non-exempt), pay rate, and benefits are accurate.
  • Work with insurance and benefit companies for new enrollments, changes to status, and termination of benefits.
  • Maintain confidential HR records and ensure management tools that record employment status, pay rates history, and other information.
  • Prepare reports on labor by department and develop tools that enable managers to better manage labor budgets

Requirements

  • Accounting degree and 5 years of accounting experience
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to learn a new software program
  • Ability to manage financial details while maintaining an understanding of the big picture
  • Interest in creating and improving upon systems
  • Self-directed and ability to work independently
  • Interest in organics, sustainable agriculture, food, or social mission movement and being a part of a growing company
  • Ability to be flexible and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well in a team environment that promotes. inclusiveness and communication among team members
