Job Summary:
Owls in this role visually design objects, characters, spaces, and other game elements, consulting with the creative team to realize product vision through art. Additional areas of contribution may include supporting user interface design, marketing materials, key art development, and brand materials as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver high-quality conceptual artwork adherent to approved style guides, against tight deadlines, rapid iteration, and other constraints
- Maintain an understanding of VR’s unique constraints on object interactivity, player expectation, and spatial design, and account for these in concepts
- Create concepts showcasing the design, functionality, and key characteristics of a given game element to communicate ideas and collaborate with other disciplines
- Collaborate with project and art leadership to ensure concepts are growing and enriching the IP and meeting gameplay needs
- Manage owned tasks as well as larger, complex projects while effectively meeting deadlines
- Balance keeping designed objects familiar with adding humorous, playful, world-building twists on them
Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Firm grasp of art and design fundamentals, with a deep understanding of form, shape, structure, and silhouette and the ability to self-critique at all phases of project development
- Proficient in a variety of digital 2D software programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator, with a willingness to learn new software programs and tools
- Familiarity with end-to-end game development pipelines for art content
- Ability to effectively communicate and translate ideas from blue-sky exploration to model-ready concept artwork, within a highly iterative and collaborative work context
- Autonomous self-starter mindset with an aptitude for creative problem solving and the ability to break down complex projects and deliverables into manageable, estimate-able increments
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects involving multiple Owls simultaneously and with little oversight from project leadership
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Prior credited experience on one or more game titles, supporting environment, prop, or character concept design
- Providing of a portfolio of work demonstrating strong artistic and storytelling ability
- 4+ years experience as a concept artist
Preferred Education and Experience:
- 5+ years experience relevant to the position
- Prior experience developing VR games or products
- Shipped products showcasing technical art abilities
- Basic understanding of 3D modeling
- Appreciation of puns (or at least the ability to groan at them)
Physical Requirements:
- Owls must be able to use virtual reality headsets but are not expected to own one.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, work from home, 40-hours per week position. Core hours of work are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT.
Travel:
For Owls working outside of the Austin, TX area, travel to Austin may be required 4 to 6 times per year.
