Full Job Description

Under general supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, the Laboratory Administrative Director plans, coordinates, directs and maintains all operational facets of the laboratory, including Blood Bank, Coagulation, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Histology, Pathology, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.  Maintains efficient and effective department operation while requiring compliance with all state, federal and local regulatory laws & standards. Participates in the Facility Quality Improvement and Service Excellence programs.  Interprets and facilitates the application and implementation of the philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures of the organization.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

      1. Ensures integration of the department(s) into the primary functions of the organization.  Creates a collaborative, productive work environment through positive relationships with senior leadership, other directors, physicians, employees, patients/families and the community.
      2. Monitors the provision of Laboratory services for inpatients and outpatients.
      3. Investigates incidents and patient complaints, performing service recovery when possible.
      4. Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements.
      5. Develops and implements appropriate policies and procedures.
      6. Plans and provides a sufficient number of qualified and competent staff for the service line.
      7. Establishes work schedules and assignments to ensure coverage as demonstrated by maintaining appropriate staff ratios within approved budgetary guidelines while ensuring safe, quality patient care.
      8. Ensures completion of all employee records including but not limited to: payroll, performance evaluations, competencies, personnel action requests etc.
      9. Ensures initial orientation and continuing education opportunities are presented appropriately for all department staff.
      10. Coordinates and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement processes for the department(s).  Maintains quality control programs, as appropriate.
      11. Participates in the budget planning process by making recommendations for resources, including personnel, equipment and space as appropriate.
      12. Provides 24 hour accountability of leadership by appropriate delegation, using sound decision making and critical thinking skills.
      13. Assists in business development and strategic planning for the department.
      14. Provides assistance and information pertaining to Clinical Pathology to Medical Staff.  Collaborates with the Laboratory Medical Director.
      15. Functions competently in the staff role as necessary.
      16. Demonstrates adaptability, problem solving and professional behavior at all times.
      17. Participates in continuous Quality Improvement programs.
      18. Abides by the Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
      19. Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
      20. Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
      21. Performs other related duties as assigned.

LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS

All positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members.  Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or Microbiology required.

Experience: Five years of experience as Medical Technologist required.  Prior experience as Chief Technologist or Laboratory Manager preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current MT (ASCP) or equivalent required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent: sitting, standing, walking, & reaching.

Occasional: lifting, carrying, bending, & squatting,

Visual and hearing acuity required; color vision required for perceiving colors of solutions.    Work is inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.

Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.
