ORGANIZATION
The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School (EMNRBS) is a charter, co-ed, tuition-free high school. With a total student body of 440 boys and girls, EMNRB seeks to foster a unique, innovative, hands-on learning environment. This school is the first specialty high school in the entire country for basketball, but NOT for the PLAYING of the game. The Founding Trustee, former NBA Commissioner David Stern, often said, “A Ball and a Book Can Change the World”. The EMNRB community promotes a commitment to excellence, social responsibility, high achievement, and rigorous programs that empower and inspire students and those who facilitate their learning. OPPORTUNITY
The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School (EMNRBS) seeks passionate, energetic, and dedicated Special Education Teachers to join the school in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching at the High School level, an enthusiasm for project-based instruction and integrated curriculum, a passion for student engagement, a willingness to grow and develop pedagogically, and a passion for working with adolescents in a community with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Content areas: Math: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus. Science: Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics. Humanities: Global History, U.S. History, Government, ELA.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities of our teachers will include:
Meeting Students’ Needs
- Provides research-based specialized instruction to ensure that each student is reaching the goals of their IEP; Provides tailored support and accommodations for students to meet day-to-day instructional goals and course objectives.
- Collaborates with teaching staff, school counselors, interventionists, families, and the administration to ensure that each student is provided with the services outlined in their IEP; Serves as primary contact for the parent.
- Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
- Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals, including closely collaborating with content teachers to provide accommodations and support for upcoming units and lessons.
- Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis on individualized instruction using appropriate sources, including iPads.
Special Education Processes and Compliance
- Participates in the special education evaluation and re-evaluation process.
- Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals in compliance with all related state and federal rules and regulations.
- Completes all school and state reporting requirements.
Collaboration, Professional Development, and School-Wide Responsibilities
- Assist in establishing a culture of high academic expectations and behavior.
- Support a vision of growth for all student’s development of advanced literacy skills.
- Prepare rigorous and engaging lessons that integrate basketball-related career paths.
- Facilitate interdisciplinary, project-based units.
- Foster collaboration with colleagues to improve practices throughout the school and share best practices.
- Develop and plan a curriculum aligned to New York State standards.
- Support our students' social/emotional development by implementing SEL techniques and/or mindfulness curriculum throughout the class.
- Maintain ongoing parent communication.
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students and deliver Advisory lessons.
- Participate in the self-evaluation process for personal and professional growth.
- Contribute to the professional community by identifying needs and developing solutions.
- Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in the content area or related field required.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Dual certification in another content area is preferred.
- New York State Certification preferred.
- SPED Certification.
- Deep knowledge of the New York State Framework and Standards in the content area.
- Experience with active learning techniques.
