Full Job Description

The Opto-Electronics Technician will work closely with the production and engineering teams in the manufacture, test, calibration, and troubleshooting of new and returned products for our customers. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for characterization measurements of precision mirrors and various plano-optics. Although the location of the position is in Londonderry, NH, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

 

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Characterizing electro-optical assemblies and sub-assemblies produced by Thorlabs.
  • Performing interferometry on vendor-supplied, customer-supplied, and in-house assembled optics.
  • Setting up test equipment and maintaining logs of tests performed.
  • Troubleshooting and solving hardware and software issues with production equipment.
  • Performing diagnostics and reviews of equipment to track performance and maintain quality control; ensuring production equipment is properly maintained.
  • Contributing to the generation and maintenance of assembly and test work instructions.
  • Contributing effort in improving production fixtures and tooling towards efficient production.
  • Recommending design and procedure changes for continuous improvement to product quality, performance, and manufacturability.

 

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

 

Physical Activities:

Ability to handle critical and fragile optical components and sensitive equipment. Experience with electronic and/or optical test and measurement equipment, including oscilloscopes, laser sources, power meters, and interferometers. The employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. As a result, they should have a steady hand and good hand-eye coordination. Work may be sedentary, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally. Employees may come in contact with but not limited to acetone, epoxy, oops, super glue, Loctite glues, ethanol, and their work cell areas may be noisy at times.

Requirements

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a similar position preferred. Demonstrated ability to assemble and test electronic components from start to finish.

 

Education:

  • Associates’ degree or higher in engineering, technology, or physical science; or US military electronics training or equivalent in a similar position preferred.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Having good personal skills and work habits, such as the ability to work competently, neatly and safely, while following instructions to complete tasks.
  • Ability to identify, locate and read a standard specification sheet to gather key characteristics of a component or device.
  • Ability to read, understand and generate simple XY plots and quickly understand and/or present data.
  • Proficiency in general computer use, including Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) and Adobe PDF formats.

 

A successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate skills in at least one of the following areas:

 

Automation

  • Some understanding of basic process automation control of electronics or motorized equipment
  • Ability to connect peripheral devices using USB, RS-232 serial and Ethernet and ensure devices can be addressed test and measurement.

 

Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

  • Able to read and understand a basic 2D line drawing, basic CAD operation-parts, joints, assemblies and drawings. Demonstrates an understanding of GD&T and drawings symbols.

 

Electronics

  • Familiarity with basic electrical concepts including use of a multi-meter and oscilloscope.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics for testing and/or troubleshooting.
