Full Job Description

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Energy Conservation Operations Manager. The apprentice carpenter is responsible for performing all types of basic carpentry repairs and construction at the direction of more senior carpenters, inspectors, and supervisors.

Essential Functions :

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete weatherization tasks on low-income residences:
    • Seal attic and basement bypasses.
    •  Weatherstrip doors and caulk air leaks.
    •  Utilize the blower door to focus infiltration work.
    • Install proper attic ventilation.
    •  Insulate crawl spaces, kneewalls, wellrooms, and water pipes.
    •  Blow insulation into attics and sidewalls.
  •  Participate in Carpenters and Jointers training program:
    •  Must join the local carpenter’s union within 2 months of hire.
    • Must complete a 6 month probationary period.
    •  If necessary, acquire all tools as specified by the supervisor within 90 days.
    •  Attend unpaid carpentry school classes one week every quarter.
  •  Gain experience by learning to perform the following to company standards:
    •  Install insulation materials.
    •  Construct, erect, install and repair structures and fixtures of various materials.
    • Use carpenter's hand tools and power tools.
    •  Review and conform to building codes.
    •  Select proper materials to be used as appropriate to the job.
    • Prepare layout, using ruler, framing square, and calipers.
    • Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
    • Shape materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels and planes.
    • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  •  Contribute to a healthy and safe work environment:
    • Maintain all personal and company tools and equipment.
    • Immediately report any accident or unsafe condition.
    •  Utilize protective equipment as provided and required
  •  Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety: Responsible for conducting all duties in a safe manner.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • High School education or GED required.
  • Must undergo a criminal background check. If the candidate does not successfully pass the background check, it will be reviewed by management.
  • Preferred experience, minimum of 6 months building trades or other related construction experience.

Core Technology Competency: Level 1 - Basic

Training: Periodically attend mandatory training at Carpenters Union training center

Driver's License: A valid driver's license and reliable transportation on a daily basis is required. No major violations and no more than two minor violations in the last five years. Clean driving records are preferred.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to successfully pass a pre-placement physical that includes Department of Transportation (Non-federal DOT) medical examination, CRT test, Upper Extremity test and Medical evaluation for respirator use. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds, carry up to 50 pounds.

Environmental Requirements: Physical work environment includes dirt, dust, cold, heat, potentially hazardous materials and potential exposure to airborne fibers such as asbestos, fiberglass, cellulose and gasses such as natural gas, carbon monoxide, radon and others. Ability to work in substandard housing conditions including temperature variations, strong odors, cockroaches, bedbugs, and other pests.

Schedule: 7:00am - 3:30pm, 40 hours/week, Monday - Friday
