Full Job Description

The Common Market is seeking a dedicated and passionate Executive Director for the Great Lakes Chapter to lead our efforts in connecting communities with local food from sustainable family farms. This role will oversee the operations of the Great Lakes food distribution hub while championing our mission of fostering a fair and accessible food system. The ideal candidate will have experience in non-profit management, a strong understanding of the food distribution landscape, and a commitment to community engagement and sustainability.

The Executive Director will be responsible for strategic planning, operational oversight, and relationship building with farmers, community organizations, and institutional partners. This is a unique opportunity for an innovative leader who is ready to make a significant impact on food security and equitable access to healthy food across the Great Lakes region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance the operations and sustainability of the Great Lakes Chapter.
  • Manage the daily operations, including distribution logistics, procurement, sales, and customer outreach.
  • Build strong relationships with local farmers, food producers, and school & hospital partners to strengthen our network.
  • Lead fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor relations, and building a supportive funding base.
  • Ensure adherence to all food safety regulations and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Represent The Common Market at community events, conferences, and meetings to promote the mission and vision.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment among staff, encouraging professional development and inclusivity.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, food systems, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, food distribution, or a related sector.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising and grant management.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting and fiscal oversight.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in cultivating partnerships with diverse stakeholders and community organizations.
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices and local food systems.
  • Strong leadership capabilities, with a focus on team building and staff development.
  • Ability to be adaptable and innovative in a fast-paced, changing environment.
