Full Job Description

The Director of Graduate Success and Residency Planning at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) is a pivotal role responsible for guiding and supporting students through their transition to residency, a journey that spans their time at ICOM (OMS I to OMS IV). This includes overseeing all aspects of the Match process, application services, interview training, and providing comprehensive guidance on specialty competitiveness, rank order lists, and the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP). The Director will also integrate the AAMC Careers in Medicine program into the curriculum for OMS I and II students, assist in specialty decision-making, and connect students with research, networking opportunities, and specialty-specific mentors.  This position leads the development of Medical Student Performance Evaluations, or MSPE’s, organizing a team-wide effort.

Residency Transition Leadership:

  • Lead and direct all aspects of the transition to residency for ICOM students.
  • Lead the ICOM Match task force.
  • Oversee platforms used in the Match process, including ERAS, NRMP, and other relevant application and match services.
  • Be the college leader in all aspects of the ERAS and other application services and multiple match programs
  • Provide interview training and guidance on specialty competitiveness.
  • Assist students in developing rank order lists and provide SOAP guidance.
  • Serve as the course director of the Residency Preparation Course for OMS III students.
  • Organize and lead Dean’s Hours on relevant residency topics.

Curriculum Integration:

  • Integrate AAMC Careers in Medicine into the curriculum for OMS I and II students.
  • Develop and deliver workshops, seminars, and resources to support career planning and specialty selection.

Student Advising and Mentorship:

  • Assist students in decision-making regarding specialty choices.
  • Connect students with research and networking opportunities.
  • Facilitate connections with specialty-specific mentors and advisors.

Residency Application Development:

  • Guide students in developing all aspects of their residency applications, including personal statements, letters of recommendation, CVs, noteworthy characteristics, and Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs).

Resource Connection:

  • Connect students to specialty-specific resources, such as interest groups, national organizations, liaisons, and career sessions.
  • Provide MATCH data and specialty-specific resources to students and advisors.

Advising and Planning:

  • Lead advising efforts and planning for faculty and staff serving as student career advisors.
  • Develop specialty mentors and advisors from alumni and adjunct faculty to support specialty choices.
  • Coordinate with ICOM Alumni Association to support their mentor program for OMS III and OMS IV medical students at ICOM.

Communication and Outreach:

  • Lead all communication to students, faculty, and staff regarding career development, including ERAS (and other application services), the NRMP MATCH (and other match programs), webinars, special interest group meetings, and application timelines.
  • Connect OMS I and OMS II students with senior ICOM students for MATCH and application guidance.

Military Match Guidance:

  • Lead military students in preparing for and applying to the military match.

Residency Education:

  • Educate students on the types of residency positions, including categorical vs. transitional or preliminary years.
  • Guide students on how to research and evaluate residency programs.

Support for At-Risk Applicants:

  • Work with at-risk applicants while leading the SOAP task force.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Requirements

  • BS degree preferred in a relevant field (e.g., education, counseling, healthcare administration).
  • Extensive experience in career services, preferably within a medical or healthcare education setting.
  • Strong understanding of the residency application process, including ERAS, NRMP, and SOAP.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Commitment to supporting the diverse needs of medical students in their career development.
  • A team player who values collaboration, mutual support and team cohesion.
  • History of success in working with clinical faculty, administrators, staff, residents, and medical students within the medical or higher education learning community.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in English effectively in writing and orally, and to work collaboratively in a complex setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as advanced skills in Microsoft Office and/or the Apple Office Suite.
  • Ability to multi-task and anticipate needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to keep appropriate information confidential.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team-based environment with the ADGME’s staff, peers, and full-time and community-based faculty.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrate effective time management skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
