Full Job Description

Are you passionate about financial management? We are looking for a detail-oriented, driven, and results-oriented Finance Controller to oversee all aspects of accounting, internal and external financial reporting, as well as the development of internal control policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in US GAAP and nonprofit accounting and reporting, possess excellent leadership and communication skills, and have the ability to support the design and implementation of a new ERP system. Moreover, a key aspect of this role is driving continuous process improvement initiatives.

The Controller at GlobalGiving, reporting to the Vice President Of Finance, has oversight responsibility, in partnership with the VP, overall finance, accounting and reporting activities, and donation management in the organization. The Controller will ensure that GlobalGiving has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. Utilizing hands-on accounting and managerial experience and an in-depth understanding of accounting principles and nonprofit regulations, the Controller will lead day-to-day fiscal operations, including responsibility for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, regulatory compliance related to financial operations, and financial reporting.

Primary Responsibilities

 (include the following, but not all-inclusive of other duties that may be assigned)

  • Oversee the operation of accounting, including cash, revenue and accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general accounting, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closings  
  • Assist in VP of Finance to create and implement standardized accounting processes and enhance automation 
  • Develop timely and accurate financial reports in compliance with federal, state, and industry accounting standards. 
  • Maintain all internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets, and actual expenditures.
  • Create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual for accounting policy and regulations and roll out reconciliation procedures
  • Assist the annual budgeting process by coordinating, preparing, and reviewing the annual budgets for GlobalGiving
  • Compile budget vs. actual report, identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local protocols, including legal requirements, and interpret new and existing legislation
  • Maintain oversight of banking activities 
  • Design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives. 
  • Review, analyze, and determine causes of any inaccuracies in financial records and prepare correcting entries.
  • Work closely with GlobalGiving’s product team and support the development of systems necessary to administer organizational accounting and financial management as well as systems implicated by such tasks
  • Oversee grants accounting; ensure that expenditures consistently align with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period and that required reports are submitted timely.  
  • Monitor and manage organizational cash flow and assist the VP of Finance in forecasting a short to medium-term cash flow
  • Continuously collaborate with program managers and directors to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish fiscal and administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Responsible for coordinating the annual audit and 990 for the Foundation.

Requirements

Required Qualifications 

For our team to be a great fit for you, the following qualifications should resonate with you:

  • 5-7+ years of accounting and fiscal experience, ideally in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs, including staff supervision
  • Minimum of a BA in Accounting or Business Administration
  • A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the VP of Finance, the responsibility for fiscal management
  • Superior knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting and compliance, and financial reporting
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and payroll
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data
  • Proficient in using Finance Software (such as NetSuite) and financial and accounting reporting systems. 
  • Familiar with federal and state financial regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and people management skills and excellent communication skills (oral/written) and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate integrity, credibility, a positive, can-do, optimistic attitude, and a strong work ethic in the performance of job duties.
  • Excellent analytical ability, strong planning, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition, the ideal candidate would also have some or all of the following qualifications:

  • CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • A master's degree in accounting preferred
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants 
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels
  • Prior experience in ERP systems (i.e., NetSuite/Salesforce) preferred

Salary range: $135,000 - $145,000

Location

This is a full-time position reporting to the VP of Finance. GlobalGiving is a hybrid workplace allowing for frequent remote work. While candidates based in the greater Washington, DC area are preferred, we will consider strong candidates who wish to work remotely.
