WHO WE ARE

We know that our climate goals can only be met by rapidly reducing emissions and removing the carbon that already exists in our atmosphere. Carbon180 is a climate NGO with a vision to remove legacy carbon emissions from the atmosphere and create a livable climate in which current and future generations can thrive. Based in Washington, DC, we design and champion equitable, science-based policies that bring carbon removal solutions to gigaton scale.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Here at Carbon180, we believe there is no “perfect” candidate and want to encourage applying even if all the requirements listed aren’t met. Our goal is to build an authentic workplace by valuing diversity in our candidates. We are always looking to expand our growing team with dynamic and enthusiastic individuals. We look forward to receiving your application!

THE OPPORTUNITY

Overview

At Carbon180, we’re on a mission to design and champion equitable, science-based policies that bring carbon removal solutions to gigaton scale. We are currently seeking a Finance Associate who will play a vital role in supporting our organization’s financial operations as we continue to grow and expand our impact in the carbon removal field. This role will help drive efficient financial processes and support our broader organizational goals.

The Finance Associate will work closely with our Director of Finance and Director of Development to ensure smooth financial management, including budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance. This person will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and supporting day-to-day financial operations with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy.

This role requires someone who is organized, flexible, and detail-oriented while also bringing a people-first approach to their work. As with all roles at Carbon180, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ). While we are a partially remote organization, this position requires candidates in the DC Metro area due to specific banking needs. The Finance Associate can choose to work from home up to four days per week but will need to visit the headquarters weekly to manage essential tasks such as checking mail.

This position is ideal for someone who is proactive, strategic, and ready to contribute to a collaborative and innovative environment. It is an excellent opportunity to join a mission-driven organization and support our efforts to advance climate solutions at scale.

Major roles + responsibilities

    • Front of house administration: This role is first in line handling email and correspondence and requests to the overall finance team.
    • Mail and correspondence: Manages multiple mailboxes, including virtual- distributes and escalates important mail, scans images as needed and files digital images in appropriate folders.
    • Receivables and donation processing: Reviews accounts, processes transactions, and records them daily in the accounting system and Salesforce; and files batch information in the appropriate folders.
    • Donor and receivables support: responds to requests from donors or individuals issuing payments to the organization.
    • Banking: prepares physical deposit batches, logs checks, and deposits them at the bank.
    • Donor stewardship: prepares donation acknowledgement letters and elevates major donor letters to Director of Development and/or Executive Director as needed.
    • Reporting: prepare historical donation reports for analysis.
    • Grant Administration: monitor grant reporting deadlines proactively and notifies the appropriate team(s) of needed materials.
    • Filing: weekly processing of expense approvals to relevant folders for access.
    • Digital file management: oversee the administration of the organization’s file sharing folders (currently Google drive).

WHO YOU ARE

Your background:

  • 1+ years of experience in administrative roles that include management of data and/or filling.
  • Able to enter data into various computer programs with a high degree of accuracy.
  • 1+ years of experience with accounts receivable, banking, and/or similar accounting functions.
  • Experience with Salesforce and cloud based accounting systems a plus
  • You have a flexible demeanor willing to handle the “front of house” transactions with a people-oriented mindset while maintaining a high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to DEIBJ.

Our ideal finance associate believes deeply in our mission. Beyond that:

  • You are happy to get out of your comfort zone.
  • You’re an excellent communicator. Whether it’s designing new systems and procedures and relaying them to the team, writing a proposal for funders, or communicating complex information to stakeholders, you know that clarity, timing, and format matter.
  • You’re high-impact, low-ego, and kind to yourself and others. You choose optimism, assume the best, and resonate with our core values.
  • You actively seek out opportunities to dismantle inequitable systems and other harmful corporate norms and are comfortable learning and growing your DEIBJ literacy.
  • You love data and details but you can also shift gears to be people focused when needed.

  • One Boat. We work hard to ensure that we are rowing in one direction as a team, aligning our work and resources to shared goals.
  • Pencil to Pen. We think critically, do our research, and weigh multiple options. Then, we commit to move to action.
  • Win + Lose Together. When one of us succeeds, we all win. When we encounter challenges, we determine how best to redirect the energy and resources of the team to solve them.
  • Person in the Professional. Our team is composed of real people with real passions, interests, and needs within and outside of work. We believe we need to care for ourselves and others to be our best and most productive selves at work.
  • Make Space, Share Space. We believe in making space for all voices to be heard, within our team and our broader work - particularly and especially voices historically disenfranchised and disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change.
  • Be a Window, Not a Door. We’re committed to transparency, and to shining light on how and why decisions are made. We are honest with one another, ask for clarity, and operate with integrity to build a culture of trust.
  • Grow the Braintrust. We are committed to constantly learning, and to staying up to speed on the science of our field. We work to grow our knowledge, sharpen our skills, and to bring great minds to the field of carbon removal.

We currently require that all employees who plan to enter a Carbon180 office or otherwise meet in person with coworkers or other third parties on Carbon180 business are fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. Accordingly, this role may require full COVID-19 vaccination (subject to any exemptions or accommodations due to medical or religious reasons).

Carbon180 is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, disability, marital status, veteran status, or any other occupationally irrelevant criteria. Carbon180 continually seeks to enrich its staff and team culture. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities.
