Job Description: The Near East South Asia (NESA) Center’s mission is to enhance stability in the Near East and South Asia by providing an academic environment where strategic issues can be addressed, understanding deepened, partnerships fostered, defense-related decision-making improved, and cooperation strengthened between military and civilian leaders from the region and the United States. The Center builds on the strong bilateral relationships between the United States and countries in the NESA region by focusing on a multilateral approach to addressing regional security concerns and issues.
Responsibilities:
- Copying edit articles for publication, reviewing, correcting, and rearranging text to ensure consistency of internal information and clarity of expression.
- Improving clarity by reorganizing sentences and paragraphs and by correcting basic grammar and rewriting. sentences. Reviews publication submissions to determine if topic and content are related to Center’s interests.
- Maintaining regular communications and updates with prospective authors and manage double-blind peer review process.
- Ensuring internal security review by two Perry Center faculty or staff (in accordance with NDU requirements) and manages submission to Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review (DOPSR) for DOD-level review, and ensure compliance with Department of Defense Instruction 5230.29, "Security and Policy Review of DOD Information for Public Release."
- Working with authors in both English and Spanish to assist them in preparing manuscripts for publication, also verifying information and fact checking within materials, using the Internet as well as library data bases.
- Reviewing content and references for plagiarism or poor citation usage when deemed necessary; ensure photos or graphics are non-copyrighted and properly cited.
- editorial corrections.
- Writing short articles and book reviews for publications, requiring both a solid understanding of the subject matter and knowledge of WJPC’s mission, as well as coordinate and edit the annual report.
- Assisting in the development of WJPC author guidelines and style manual and conduct periodic review and update of WJPC Publications Handbook and Writing Guide. Assist providing interpretation and translations services as required.
Requirements
- Professional level written and verbal skills in English and Spanish; Portuguese language skills are desirable. 4+ years of copy-editing experience preferred.
- Mastery of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors and ability to make constructive suggestions.
- Proficiency with applying the principles of style guides, such as the Chicago Manual of Style, to different types of writing.
- Willingness to collaborate with a creative team of writers, graphic designers, and others.
- Strong computer processing skills, especially Microsoft Office.
- Basic knowledge of legal issues involved in publishing, such as plagiarism and copyrighting.
- Experience as interpreter and translation services
