Full Job Description

Scout's GIS intern will contribute to the GIS team's goal of fostering successful renewable project development by leveraging data throughout the project lifecycle. You will leverage your analytical skills to enhance the processes of the GIS team and directly support the development of utility scale wind, solar, and battery storage projects. As an intern, you will work on one of the outlined projects below in addition to contributing to the core functions of the GIS team. 

 

Projects: 

Project Summary Table - the current Scout project summary table is a go-to resource for project information for many teams across the company, including GIS, but there is a lack of systems in place to maintain data recency, quality, or completeness. The intern would strategize and implement a full system to create, maintain, and visualize key project information that relevant to the GIS and Engineering teams. You'll play a key role in ensuring that a key dataset is accurate, up-to-date, and scales with Scout's future growth. 

  • You will work with the GIS team and other project development service groups to determine use cases and devise a workflow for keeping project information updated 
  • Through collaboration with the project development team, you will add project information to a database 
  • You will leverage data ETL (e.g. Python, R, FME) and visualization tools (e.g. ArcGIS, Power BI) to integrate this data into Scout's GIS platform to create maps and tools to make this information accessible to team members 

Targeted Majors: Information Science, Data Informatics, or similar technical degree 

Reference Dataset Catalog - Scout subscribes to and has accumulated many datasets that are used for project prospecting, buildable areas, or internal analyses. The knowledge of these datasets and their uses resides primarily with the GIS team but likely have uses for many Scouts. The intern would create a catalog of all datasets that Scout uses for project development that could contain information such as the uses for the dataset, optimal values (what are we looking for when analyzing this dataset?), and how to access the data in various formats. 

  • You will collaborate with the GIS, New Projects, and Engineering teams to compile a list of datasets and their key attributes 
  • Develop a user-friendly catalog system where Scouts can search, view, and read about available data 
  • Develop a set of tools to allow users to manipulate and subset data 

Targeted Majors: GIS, Computer Science, or similar technical degree 

 

In addition to one of the projects above, the intern will also contribute to the core functions of the GIS group including both web and static map creation, project site assessment, and data management. 

 

Requirements

  • Working towards or recently completed a bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Information Science or similar field 
  • Detail oriented and a desire to deliver high quality results 
  • Interest in the renewable energy industry 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities with clear target setting and follow-through capability in a fast-paced work environment. 
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently. 
  • Be able to come up with creative solutions to problems. 
  • Ability to collaborate across a variety of teams at the company. 
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. 

Timeline and Location 

This internship will begin in May or June 2024.  

We anticipate a 40-hour-per-week commitment for 12 weeks. 

Our ideal candidate will be willing to work at our Boulder, CO office.
