Position Summary

The Community Intervention Worker will be responsible for working directly with individuals and families in the community who may be facing various challenges and barriers. This role involves providing support, resources, and advocacy to help improve their overall well-being and access to necessary services.

The Community Intervention Worker will conduct street outreach within their focus area, in pre-determined gun violence hot spots to help identify and work with youth most at risk of being impacted by gun violence. Additionally, respond to hit shootings within their focus area, establishing trust with community members, leaders, and stakeholders will help CIWs to engage in violence prevention and intervention work safely and effectively. 

CIW’s will be required to become certified as a community interventionist from entities such as or equivalent to Los Angeles Violence Intervention Training Academy (LAVITA), Professional Community Intervention Training Institute (PCITI), or a Youth and Gang Violence Intervention Specialist Training Program.

Candidatemust live within the North Long Beach area OR can demonstrate a thorough understanding of the community’s demographics, cultural dynamics and list the known resources in the North Long Beach area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Engage in street outreach at public parks, schools, and other community- informed hot spots to help identify and work with youth most at risk of being impacted by gun violence.
    • Build and leverage community relationships to mediate incident-specific conflict and deescalate violent or potentially violent situations.
    • Share knowledge of safety concerns with the LBASC-4 Program Manager(s).
    • Participate in monthly leadership meetings with the GVRT.
    • Respond to the site of hit shootings when activated.
    • Provide coaching to program participants to assist with navigating complex systems and social interactions.
    • Participate in local events to engage community members and build trust (e.g., Friday night football games; PRM events; and neighborhood gatherings).

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience in community outreach or social services is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with diverse individuals
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of community resources and services
  • Empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach
