JOB PURPOSE

The position is on the Geoeconomic Influence & Threat Intelligence (GITI) team at Janes, which serves two core business areas: 1) maintaining the IntelTrak database of Russian and Chinese economic activity abroad, and 2) conducting original research and analysis on geoeconomic and national security issues using publicly available information. GITI comprises expert linguists and analysts leveraging the latest in open-source research techniques, automated sourcing and machine learning technologies, and public data investigations to provide timely, accurate, assured, structured, and interconnected data to understand the geoeconomic and national security implications of Russian and Chinese economic activity abroad.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE AT JANES

The Senior Analyst will track China and Russia’s overseas economic activity using open-source materials to develop analytic products interpreting the geopolitical and security significance of this activity for clients. Major responsibilities include conducting in-depth research, writing, and analysis on issues related to Chinese foreign policy and industrial policy, Chinese corporations, and Chinese geoeconomic statecraft. You will serve as a subject matter expert within Janes and lead ad hoc teams in project-based work, managing the project, workflow, and quality control of input from other teammates. You will also contribute to and support the administration of the IntelTrak dataset.

Additional responsibilities may involve delivering insightful and effective client presentations and briefings, mentoring junior team members, and developing templates and processes for projects. Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, are required. The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen and have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field, such as economics, business, international affairs, national security, or regional studies.

Requirements

THE REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS ROLE ARE

  • Minimum five years of experience in international relations, national security, due diligence, or related field
  • Substantial depth in understanding of the work domain, including China's policymaking process, strategic objectives, business environment, economic structure, and industrial base
  • Prior experience conducting and/or managing complex research projects on a tight timeline
  • High level of attention to detail while maintaining big-picture thinking, and ability to communicate complex ideas in clear, concise writing
  • Demonstrated research skills and experience, especially using publicly available sources in foreign languages

THE IDEAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE FOR THIS ROLE ARE

  • Strong communication skills and professional work experience representing your organisation to external audiences or customers
  • Ability to develop high-quality deliverables tailored to senior policymakers or national security stakeholders, including written products and formal or informal briefings
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized research areas, which may include:
    • China’s foreign policy and global diplomatic activities;
    • China’s development of dual-use technologies, including military-civil fusion initiatives and the research and development R&D ecosystem;
    • China’s national security strategy and defence capabilities
    • U.S. and/or European foreign policy and legislative activity related to China; and
    • Chinese economic interests and political-military relationships in specific geographic regions, such as Russia and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, or Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, including the ability to read and analyze original language sources
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States
