The Henrico Education Foundation (HEF) is seeking an educator who believes strong schools make strong communities. HEF supports the Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS), the sixth largest school district in the Commonwealth, serving 51,000 students in 72 educational facilities from diverse neighborhoods including suburban, rural and urban communities.

HEF’s work in support of HCPS is more important than ever as principals and teachers look for new instructional strategies and approaches to improve public schools and ignite student learning. Founded in 1993 as a public-private partnership with the school district, HEF serves as a catalyst to create innovation, identify research-based solutions, replicate best practices in additional classrooms, and connect key partnerships with public schools. Our mission is to strengthen public education by advancing innovative programs and initiatives designed to improve student achievement. HEF funds creative instructional approaches with strong academic goals that directly address the opportunity gap and provides resources for teachers impacting the most challenged students.

The Henrico Education Foundation is excited to provide afterschool enrichment to middle and high school students attending select Henrico County schools through the 21st Century Grant award from the Virginia Department of Education. Serving participants in our Community Learning Centers, our after-school program focuses on engaging and empowering children through activities that support their academic, physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs. Our middle and high school after-school teachers are responsible for facilitating math activities and/or literacy activities and monitoring student homework completion in a group setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and facilitates lessons, utilizing games, online resources and interactive activities, in line with academic needs and personal interests of students.
  • Shares lesson plans with the Director of Curriculum and Program Officer on a regular basis.
  • Communicates the needed resources for academic activities to the Center Director and Director of Curriculum.
  • Actively communicates with supervisor, on-site leadership and co-teachers.
  • Engages all assigned children, ensuring a high level of participation in activities.
  • Develops appropriate relationships with children and families to better understand and meet the needs of individual children.
  • Ensures the safety of children in assigned group.
  • Delivers program lesson plans in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the participants.
  • Provides active and attentive supervision, staying alert at all times.
  • Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches to the academic and social development of youth.
  • Facilitates an environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
  • Adheres to the Community Learning Center policies and procedures.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Meet the requirements of Program Leader as detailed in the Virginia Regulations for Licensed Child Day Centers which includes one of the following: a degree in child related field or an early childhood certificate or 6 months of programmatic experience with children.
  • Experience required in facilitating instruction for school-aged students.
  • Experience preferred in delivering programs in an afterschool setting.
  • At least 18 years of age with reliable transportation and a history of dependability.

  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • May be asked to work at two or more school sites per week.
  • May be asked to substitute at another site based on programming schedule and coverage needs.
