JOB PURPOSE

The position open is on the Geoeconomic Influence & Threat Intelligence (GITI) team at Janes, which serves two core business areas: maintaining the IntelTrak database of Russian and Chinese business activity abroad and custom geoeconomic research and analysis. GITI is comprised of expert linguists and analysts leveraging the latest in open-source intelligence techniques, automated sourcing, and machine learning technologies to provide timely, accurate, authenticated, structured, and interconnected data to better understand Russian and Chinese business activity abroad.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE AT JANES

The Research Analyst will track Chinese overseas economic activity to using open-source materials to help draft analytic products interpreting the geopolitical and security significance of this activity for clients. Major responsibilities include conducting in-depth research, writing, and analysis on issues related to Chinese foreign policy and industrial policy, Chinese corporations, and Chinese geo-economic statecraft. The position entails online research, writing and analysis. The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen and have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field, such as economics, business, international affairs or regional studies.

THE REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS ROLE ARE

  • Advanced research and analytical skills and experience, including using publicly available sources in foreign languages
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, and ability to present information clearly and concisely
  • High level of attention to detail while maintaining big-picture thinking
  • Ability to work under daily deadlines, while maintaining quality and objectivity
  • Demonstrated knowledge of China's policymaking process, strategic objectives, business environment, economic structure, and industrial base
  • Eligible to work in the United States

THE IDEAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE FOR THIS ROLE ARE

  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized research areas, which may include:
  • China’s foreign policy and global diplomatic activities,
  • China’s development of dual-use technologies, including military-civil fusion initiatives and the research and development R&D ecosystem,
  • China’s national security strategy and defence capabilities,
  • U.S. and/or European foreign policy related to China, and
  • Chinese economic interests and political-military relationships in specific geographic regions, such as Russia and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, or Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, including the ability to read and analyze original language sources
