Full Job Description

Counseling of Alexandria is seeking a compassionate and skilled Play Therapist to join our team on a contractual basis. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children and families in a therapeutic setting, using play therapy to help young clients process emotions, develop coping skills, and navigate behavioral challenges. This role is well-suited for a therapist with a passion for creative, child-centered approaches and a commitment to supporting children’s mental health.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Conduct play therapy sessions for children (ages 3-12) with a variety of presenting issues, including anxiety, trauma, behavioral concerns, and family-related challenges.

Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on each child’s needs, strengths, and therapeutic goals.

Utilize a variety of therapeutic play techniques and tools, such as art, sand, puppets, and games, to facilitate communication and emotional expression.

Collaborate with parents, guardians, and family members to provide feedback, education, and support as needed.

Document session notes, treatment plans, and progress in a timely and confidential manner in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.

Coordinate with other therapists and providers as necessary to ensure comprehensive care for clients.

Attend occasional team meetings and supervision sessions as needed to support clinical development and collaborative case management.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Current licensure, license eligibility, or eligibility for supervision as an LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or equivalent in the state.
  • Specialized training and experience in play therapy, with certification as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of child development and experience with trauma-informed, strengths-based, and client-centered therapeutic approaches.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with children, parents, and colleagues effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a part-time client caseload.
