We are seeking a Mission System Architect to join Umbra’s Mission Solutions department. This individual will play a pivotal role in developing solutions, products, and technologies that address both the current and future needs of the U.S. Government. The Architect will be tasked with creating new mission solutions while also investigating the potential applications of Umbra’s existing and upcoming on-orbit capabilities. Collaboration will be essential, as the Architect will work closely with the Space Systems and Software departments at Umbra. The ideal candidate is a solution-oriented innovator with exceptional technical expertise, an ability to adapt to new areas of study, and a willingness to confront complex challenges using sound first-principles methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of integrated space and ground solution concepts, utilizing Umbra's current and emerging technologies, to support Government-directed missions.
- Conduct mission systems engineering, performance analysis, and use case evaluations for conceptual designs and architectural solutions for both existing and potential customers.
- Contribute to the technical portfolio development across the company, ensuring alignment between strategy, future mission requirements, and commercial objectives.
- Assist the Director of Mission Architecture in building a robust Modeling and Simulation capability to guide the architecture, development, and evolution of Umbra's space-based systems.
- Support Umbra Government Programs capture efforts as a key technical contributor, including authoring and reviewing formal proposals and responses.
- Travel approximately 15%, visiting Umbra facilities in California, Washington D.C., and partner and customer sites.
- Perform other professional duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in systems architecture design for satellite or aerospace systems.
- A technical degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of system architecture frameworks and methodologies.
- Proven track record in leading architecture development for complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on critical thinking and innovative solutions.
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment while managing multiple tasks and priorities.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) practices and tools.
- Experience with satellite subsystems, including payload, propulsion, power, and communications.
- Experience in space system design or operations within the U.S. Government or commercial space sectors.
- Understanding of software architecture principles and development processes.
- INCOSE certification or equivalent is a plus.
- Experience with system simulation and modeling tools.

Pay Transparency
This job posting may cover multiple career levels. To ensure greater transparency, we provide base salary ranges for all roles, regardless of location. Our standard pay ranges are based on the role’s function and level, benchmarked against similar growth-stage companies. Compensation may vary based on geographical location, as certain regions may have different cost-of-living factors. The final offer will also be influenced by the candidate's skills, responsibilities, and relevant experience.
Compensation Range
The Compensation Range for this role is $120,000 - $200,000.
