Full Job Description
The telecommunicator acts as a primary emergency contact, a general information center and a message relay center for the campus. This position coordinates dispatch and deployment of Security and Facilities personnel.
This position is a part-time, benefit eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $20.57 - $25.72 per hour. The position is 20 hours per week.
Some of the hours worked could also qualify for hourly shift differential rates and weekend shift differential.
- Hours worked between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m: an additional $1.50/hr
- Hours worked between 12 a.m. and 7 a.m: an additional $3.00/hr
- Hours worked on weekends an additional $1.00/hr.
Core Responsibilities
- Works in the Public Safety Telecommunications Center as the primary telephone contact for college matters after regular business hours, on weekends and during academic breaks 365 days a year.
- Answers calls to emergency and business telephone lines and email. Serves as the first point of contact regarding emergencies, complex incidents and requests for service.
- Prioritizes calls and initiates emergency protocols and notifications as needed. Handles sensitive information discreetly and maintains necessary communications with law enforcement, fire departments, rescue squads, and hospitals.
- Coordinates dispatch and deployment of college personnel through professional radio and telephone communications.
- Monitors life safety and facility systems, including fire & security alarms, 911 call notifications, and HVAC systems for alarms associated with ammonia leaks, temperature fluctuations, pump failures and water levels.
- Monitors the card access system to ensure the security of buildings, identify unauthorized access attempts, issue appropriate access privileges and maintain lock/unlock schedules.
- Documents communications, activities and incidents in a shift log.
- Provides educational information and referral services to community members.
Requirements
- A high school diploma is required. Post-secondary education preferred.
- Ability to satisfactorily complete specialized on-the-job training required.
- Must handle confidential matters with appropriate discretion.
- Considered an essential staff position for College operations. Must have flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays and occasional long shifts. Will be required to work during designated "blackout" periods and campus emergencies.
- Maintain superior telephone & radio transmission etiquette and employ strong multi-tasking abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
- Experience with Windows programs and processes including MS Word, Excel and Outlook, data entry, e-mail, and internet required.
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Telecommunicators’ duties are primarily sedentary in nature. Must be able to stand for long periods of time occasionally and sit for long periods of time frequently with occasional carrying and walking.
- There is limited opportunity for physical movement and the dispatcher must remain alert and responsive while observing computer display screens.
- May wear telephone/radio headsets for long periods.
