Position Title: Executive Director

Location: Burlington, Vermont. This is a remote position for someone who lives in Vermont.
Reports to: Board of Directors
Hiring Range: $100,000 - $110,000

The Vermont Society of Certified Public Accountants (VTCPA) has been strengthening and supporting the accounting profession for over 90 years. VTCPA is dedicated to educating, connecting, and growing its membership within the CPA profession. The organization provides members with a strong network of professionals who represent a diverse group of industries.
Position Overview
The Executive Director reports to and collaborates with the Board of Directors on implementing strategic initiatives of VTCPA. The Executive Director ensures VTCPA meetings, programs, and services provide value to the membership. In addition, this role serves as a champion of the accounting profession and CPA credential whenever meeting with legislators, schools, and the public.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan.
- Update the Board on the status of the strategic plan and other initiatives. Make recommendations regarding the next steps with the strategic plan and projects.
- Collaborate regularly with the AICPA and state CPA societies to learn best practices and generate new ideas for making VTCPA a valuable resource for members. Conduct regular outreach to members to learn more about what they need from VTCPA.
- Bring new ideas to the Board to guide the direction of the organization and ensure VTCPA is an important resource for the accounting profession.
- Actively engage and energize board members and membership to get involved in VTCPA events and programs.
- Lead outreach efforts to CPAs across the state to motivate them to join VTCPA.
- Ensure consistent excellence with membership meetings, programs, and services.
- Organize meetings for VTCPA that include, but are not limited to, a legislative overview, spring membership elections, membership gatherings, and public outreach.
- Coordinate with colleges and high schools to get VTCPA members in front of students to discuss the opportunities within accounting.
- Deepen and refine all aspects of VTCPA communications—from web presence to external relations—with the goal of creating a consistently strong brand.
- Serve as the point person for state and federal lobbying efforts.
- Make recommendations to the Board for process improvements and efficiencies.
- Manage volunteers and keep them engaged.
- Issue membership renewal statements and collect annual dues.
- Maintain financial records including monthly financial statements with budget to actual analysis.
- Perform weekly and monthly administrative tasks that include bookkeeping entries, follow up on membership and vendor inquiries, and paying bills.
- Maintain strong vendor relationships.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience.
- CPA license and accounting experience are a bonus.
- Professional experience of 10 years or more.
- Experience working in a professional society is preferred.
- Knowledge of the accounting profession, both public and private, is preferred or a strong willingness to learn about the profession.
- Experience working with a Board is preferred.
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Effective public speaking and public relations skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
