Full Job Description

The Unit Secretary supports the management of the Medical/Surgical Unit as clerical assistant by providing accurate record keeping, organized work environment, management of supplies, and communicating continuously and effectively with hospital personnel and the public.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answers patient intercom system in a prompt manner and refers patient’s needs to the correct person. Speaks in a quiet, calm, courteous voice.
  • Answers phone in a prompt manner and refers the individual to the appropriate extension. Speaks in a quiet, calm and courteous voice.
  • Maintains accurate record keeping and clerical duties specific to the Medical/Surgical nursing unit.
  • Assists in management of unit by providing and maintaining a neat and organized work environment and management of supplies.
  • Communicates appropriate information to other health care professionals involved in patient’s care.
  • Maintains effective utilization of manpower, equipment, and supplies.
  • Treats the patient and their family with respect and dignity while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs such other duties as required from time to time by the RN Charge Case Manager, Med/Surg Director, House Supervisor and/or Patient Care Nurse.
  • Ensures that all pertinent patient information is communicated to responsible practitioner or team members.
  • Maintains composure under stress and utilizes appropriate resources to cope with stressful situations.
  • Assures that all tasks performed are in compliance with related state and federal guidelines, rules and regulations.
  • Assists with staffing when deemed necessary.
  • Willingly assists other departments with admissions and orders as deemed necessary.
  • Abides by Hospital policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.
  • Consistently demonstrates behavior which reflects that working as a team is more important than self-interest.
  • Complies with the Hospital’s core values of R.I.S.E.
  • Performance of other duties, as assigned.


Requirements

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma preferred or general education degree (GED)
  • Medical Secretary Certificate preferred or one (1) year of medical office experience
  • Must be computer literate and able to proficiently enter data into computer system
  • Ability to type minimum of 50 wpm
  • Experience in Microsoft Word and Excel preferred

Schedule:

  • Rotating shift
  • Rotating weekends
