Full Job Description

Jupiter Power is looking to grow its Market Operations team with the addition of a Senior Manager, Market Analytics.  The Senior Manager, Market Analytics will report to the Vice President, Market Analytics and be responsible for developing and executing quantitative models used to inform Jupiter Power’s structured product strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute quantitative models to support development of structured products designed around energy storage operating parameters, including standard products such as fixed-for-floating swaps, put and call options, super-peak blocks, in addition to innovating new products.
  • Implement stochastic modeling methods to evaluate the use and benefit of energy storage combined with other forms of generation or loads, such as intermittent renewable generation firming, management of locational price or shape risk, and optimization of environmental outcomes, e.g. locational marginal emissions and hourly energy attribute certificates.
  • Collaborate with Jupiter’s Market Operations team to develop modeling techniques that evaluate how portfolio-level products may be structured to enhance Jupiter’s merchant trading book using physical or financial transactions. 
  • Represent Market Analytics in cross-team coordination regarding risk policy, operational, commercial, and other considerations pertinent to structured product modeling and marketing.
  • Collaborate with the Applications Analytics team to standardize certain commercial structures and modeling approaches within the Jupiter applications platform such that these model configurations are available for routine opportunity assessment.
  • Evaluate and propose third-party data sources and software solutions to enhance the robustness and efficiency of structured product quantitative assessments.
  • Work closely with Market Analytics colleagues to maintain consistency of price and model configuration assumptions feeding into Jupiter financial models and reporting. 
  • Implement best-practice data management and modelling methodologies to position Jupiter Power as a market leader in energy storage evaluation and operational strategies for combined energy storage/generation/industrial load profiles. 
  • Contribute to Market Analytics team recommendations for use by Jupiter’s management, investors, and Board of Directors to support the evaluation of commercial opportunities and investment decisions.

Competency Statement(s)

  • Significant experience modelling production and revenue outcomes for electricity generation portfolios, including intermittent renewable, thermal and/or energy storage assets.
  • High level of comfort developing and implementing mathematical algorithms and stochastic techniques to evaluate outcomes arising from large correlated datasets and uncertainty.
  • Effectively communicates and presents data analysis and simulation results to internal colleagues and external partners.
  • Ability to implement standardized tools, processes, and reporting metrics to support internal modeling coordination and modeling efficiency.
  • Maintains composure and professionalism when faced with challenges.
  • High comfort level with small teams & organizations, with the curiosity and enthusiasm to innovate and formulate new ideas in collaboration with co-workers.
  • Unafraid to take ownership and initiative in order to be to be effective within a highly motivated, fast-moving team.

Requirements

Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of market design concepts and commercial transactions in ERCOT, including products such as tolls, heat rate call options, and power purchase agreements.
  • Understanding of energy storage technology, economics, and operations, including incorporation of technical and market parameters into economic models.
  • Practical modeling experience with option pricing theory and financial risk management.
  • Strong competency in Excel, experienced or willing to learn additional skills such as Python, R, SQL, VBA.

Education

  • Post-graduate degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or other quantitative discipline.

 

Experience

  • 4+ years of quantitative experience in the power industry, with 2+ years in a structuring or intermittent renewable energy modeling role.  4 additional years of experience in a structuring and/or intermittent renewable energy modeling role may substitute for a post-graduate degree.

Physical requirements and environment:

This role is office-based with limited travel required.  Candidates will be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time, and must be able to lift up to ten pounds repetitively.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment background investigation and may be subject to drug tests as a condition of employment.
