Demonstrates competency in all procedures within scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served; must be able to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs; must demonstrate a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatments needed by these patients to include: infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

• Explains purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment to patients.
• Conducts physician prescribed treatments of a routine nature operating Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing machines, hand held up-draft nebulizers, various oxygen delivery devices and ultrasonic nebulizers in order to administer prescribed aerosolized medication and gases, humidity, and various oxygen concentrations to the respiratory system of the patient.
• Performs chest physiotherapy treatments involving percussion, postural drainage, and suctioning in order to mobilize secretions and clear airways.
• Reviews patient charts and notes any therapy changes, always documents treatments in a legible and thorough manner.
• Performs arterial puncture and analysis.
• Sets up, operates, and monitors ventilators when patient’s respiratory system is incapable of adequate spontaneous ventilation.
• Ensures adequate maintenance of ventilation during CPR.
• Performs pulse oximetry testing as ordered by a physician.
• Carefully observes patients during treatments and reports treatments and condition of patients to appropriate personnel or physician.
• Processes respiratory therapy equipment, including cleaning and proper packaging for sterilization as required.
• Makes regular rounds to check patient equipment, filing of room humidifiers, providing full oxygen tanks for oxygen transports, as well as spot-checking other RT equipment on a timely basis.
• Maintains department in a clean, neat and orderly manner.
• Observes all safety and fire regulations relating to patients, equipment and medical gases.
• Performs EEG procedures as required.
• Performs EKG procedures as required.
• Assures that all tasks performed are in compliance with related state and federal guidelines, rules and
• regulations.
• Checks and maintains supplies and equipment on all YCH crash carts according to current policy.
• Assures all tasks performed are in compliance with related State and Federal guidelines, rules and regulations.
• Abides by Hospital policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.

Requirements

• Licensed by the State of Texas as an RCP, holding a current certificate.
• Maintains current certifications in CPR, ACLS, PALS, and NRP.
