Full Job Description
Farmers Branch Manske Library is seeking a Librarian 1. This role plays a crucial role in supporting the operations and services of the library. This position requires a diverse skill set, including expertise in programming proficiency and collection development experience. This position is responsible for maintaining and optimizing designing, and implementing engaging programs for patrons, curating library collections, and providing assistance at service desks.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Programming:
- Plan, coordinate, and execute various programs and events for library patrons including crafts, workshops, lectures, and cultural activities.
- Design and execute a variety of engaging and entertaining programs.
- Collaborate with community organizations, schools, and local businesses to expand the reach and impact of library programs.
- Collection Development
- Curate and maintain the assigned library collections, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, and digital resources as needed.
- Conduct regular assessments of the collections to identify areas for expansion or improvement incorporating diverse voices and perspectives into the collection.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop displays, promotions, and programming related to library resources.
- Circulation Support:
- Engage with patrons at the service desks, providing reference assistance, reader guidance, and program information.
- Provide courteous and efficient customer service to patrons at the circulation desk, including checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, collecting fines, and shelving returned items.
Additional Duties:
- Knowledge and Advancement
- Know, understand, and administer the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library; in addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library.
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
- Continuing Education and Professional Development
- Actively pursue opportunities for professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Attend workshops, conferences, webinars, and training sessions related library management, grant writing, and operations.
- Share insights and best practices gained through professional development activities with colleagues to foster a culture of learning and innovation within the library.
Requirements
An individual should possess the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities and have the required education, training, and/or work experience.
- MLS/MLIS is required
- Multilingual is a plus.
- Experience working in a library setting, demonstrating proficiency in database management, programming, and media collection development.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach to service delivery.
- Proficiency in relevant software and technology platforms, including library management systems, database software, and programming tools.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends to accommodate programming schedules and library hours.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location
- File and retrieve books and other items on high shelves
- Lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
