Under general supervision of the Director, the Supervisor is responsible and accountable for coordinating and supervising the nursing care provided to patients. This leadership role mentors, provides guidance, clinical expertise, and functional direction to members of the health care team while optimizing available resources to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Provides patient care coordination, staff education and competency validation, and organization of quality/performance improvement activities. The evening shift Supervisor must be competent in Hemodialysis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

      1. Coordinates, facilitates, and manages safe care for inpatients.  Directs and evaluates nursing care. Monitors patient care activities and ensures the proper application of department policy and procedure and adherence to National Patient Safety goals.
      2. Troubleshoots problems and serves as a clinical resource and mentor to all staff members in the applicable inpatient nursing departments, regularly providing coaching and feedback.
      3. Ensures appropriate equipment and supplies are available and resources are utilized in the most efficient manner possible.
      4. Demonstrates effective communication with all members of the interdisciplinary team including physicians.
      5. Provides support and educational resources for staff, participates in planning and provision of education, and ensures staff competency validation.
      6. Collaborates with staff and other disciplines to improve processes related to patient care and satisfaction using QI/PI tools.
      7. Conducts purposeful leader rounding on patients.  Investigates incidents and patient complaints, performing service recovery.
      8. Performs discharge calls to provide patient follow up.
      9. Steps into the staff role whenever needed.  Delivers appropriate care to patients, at a competent level, according to the needs of the patient/population served.
      10. Coordinates and plans delivery of nursing care with a multidisciplinary team and administers appropriate clinical decisions in the delivery of patient care. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, provide, document and evaluate care.
      11. Provides patient/family teaching based on the needs of each patient and plans ways to meet those needs.
      12. Administers and reconciles medications appropriately.
      13. Adheres to infection prevention protocols.
      14. Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including those pertaining to confidentiality, informed consent and privacy.
      15. Demonstrates adaptability, problem solving and professional behavior at all times.
      16. Participates in continuous Quality Improvement programs.
      17. Actively participates in hospital and departmental group meetings and committees.
      18. Actively participates in survey readiness activities and ensures compliance with all regulatory standards.
      19. Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
      20. Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
      21. Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
      22. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS

All positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members.  Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing, BSN preferred.

Experience: Three years of clinical experience in the hospital or related acute setting in a Charge Nurse or other supervisory role.

Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, or immediately eligible. Basic Life Support certification required within 30 days of employment, before patient care is administered independently. Advanced Cardiac Life Support & Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications within 90 days of employment. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent: standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling & reaching.

Occasional: sitting, bending, squatting, climbing kneeling, twisting.

Visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity required; Color vision required for perceiving changes in patients’ skin color and colors of medicines and solutions.  Work is mostly inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.

Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, radiant energy, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.
