JOB SUMMARY

The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining a unified and consistent brand voice across various communication platforms and materials. This position will closely collaborate with internal teams and external partners to produce a range of content ranging from quarterly market reports to social media posts and ensure strong alignment with the organization’s strategic goals and industry trends. This position will also contribute to the organization’s digital presence, assist with monitoring the effectiveness of communication strategies, and adjust, as needed, to maintain the brand’s relevance and impact in promoting Downtown Houston.

This position will report to the Director of Engagement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develops and implements written communications that align with the organization’s objectives, employing journalistic standards for compelling storytelling.
  2. Writes, edits, and distributes content for a wide range of assets including, but not limited to, quarterly market reports, internal and external presentations, public space branding, event materials, and digital content such as website and social media posts.
  3. Assists with digital marketing campaigns across SEO, PPC, email marketing, and content marketing.
  4. Assists with monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on web activity, social media engagement, and campaign performance to identify trends and optimization opportunities.
  5. Works closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure messaging is aligned with current industry trends and organizational priorities.
  6. Participates in cross-departmental meetings to maintain consistency in branding and strategic goals across all campaigns.
  7. Manages multiple projects simultaneously and ensures adherence to timelines and budgetary parameters. 
  8. Processes invoices and maintains accurate financial records.
  9. Ensures all communications adhere to brand guidelines.
  10. Monitors media coverage and industry trends, and adjusts communications strategies, as appropriate.
  11. Collaborates with the Creative Strategy Lead, Events, Marketing, Membership, and Economic Development teams to provide innovative concepts and content.
  12. Builds and maintains positive relationships through teamwork, collaboration, authenticity, and transparency.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field preferred.
  • At least five years of professional experience with a portfolio showcasing strong writing skills, creative problem-solving, innovation and adaptability.
  • Proven experience in professional copywriting.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex data into clear and compelling written communications.
  • Proficiency in Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite and other relevant software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for Downtown Houston and a desire to contribute to its vibrancy.
