As an Old South Carriage Company tour guide, you will showcase Charleston's history and beauty by combining your confidence, charm, knowledge of Charleston history, and storytelling skills to delight our guests. You'll master strong equestrian skills to safely drive our beautiful draft horses on a carriage tour of the peninsula.
In addition to providing accurate historic tours and engaging haunted tours of Charleston, you'll answer our guest's questions pertaining to Charleston, it’s rich history, and even its dining options. We want our guests to not only enjoy our tour, but enjoy their entire visit to our city.
As a premier tour operator, we have high standards that you will help us maintain. We put a premium on quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. We offer paid training to all new carriage tour guides and will bring you through the process of becoming a licensed tour guide in downtown Charleston.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Carriage Tour Guide
- Provide excellent customer service to our guests
- Drive a horse and carriage safely throughout Downtown Charleston
- Give accurate historic tours and engaging haunted tours

Today, with 30+ horses and a fleet of carriages, Old South Carriage offers what you would expect from a large touring company without sacrificing the personal commitment unique to a family owned business. We are a premier tour operator with a focus on serving our Charleston visitors with unsurpassed hospitality, and providing excellent equine care to our horses. We believe that providing the best experience starts with hiring the best tour guides.
Requirements
- Successfully obtain certification from the City of Charleston (Palmetto Guild Certification) we provide study materials, training and coaching
- Successfully pass Haunted Tour Guide Exam: Study materials and training provided
- Generally "open scheduling availability" (week days, weekends, some evenings)
- Must have valid drivers license
- Must be engaging, well-spoken, and personable
- Pass pre-employment Drug Screen

- Industry-leading pay ($35-$40 per tour, plus tips). Our pay is considered the highest in this market. Guides are placed on a progressive per tour wage plus receive excellent cash tips from our guests.
