Full Job Description

On behalf of our client, SKM (Schaffner, Knight, Minnaugh & Co, P.C.), located in Erie, Pennsylvania, Decision Associates is seeking a Director of Accounting & Auditing. SKM was founded in 1995 and has offices in Erie and Jamestown, New York. As a full service CPA firm, they provide services to a variety of clients and industries including: manufacturing, construction, retail, professional service organizations, wholesalers, and auto dealerships. The working environment at SKM is boutique-like with specialists who hold multiple designations and the company's mission is to provide clients with information and insights that will result in improved internal controls, business opportunities, and income tax savings.

The Director of Accounting & Auditing is a crucial member of the team, leading the accounting and auditing department and ensuring the highest standards of management, quality control, and compliance. 

*This is a primarily on-site role in Erie and will require relocation if not already living in or around the Erie, Pennsylvania area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations of department and staff
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the performance of the accounting and auditing teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture
  • Analyze department metrics to identify trends, variances, and areas of improvement
  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality control procedures for accounting and auditing department, ensuring adherence to professional standards and best practices
  • Oversee AICPA peer review process including preparation, coordination, and implementation of recommendations
  • Develop and implement accounting and auditing policies, procedures, and process improvements to enhance controls, operational efficiency, and engagement quality
  • Provide strategic financial insights and improvement recommendations to senior management and partners
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), GAAS (Generally Accepted Auditing Standards), and other relevant professional regulations
  • Monitor and manage risks, stay current with changes, and take responsibility for implementing new standards and provide team training on those changes
  • Serve as key point of contact for clients related to accounting and auditing services, collaborating with other departments and partners as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required, additional designations are a plus
  • Minimum of 10-12 years progressive accounting and auditing experience, with at least 2-4 years leadership experience in a public accounting firm
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, auditing standards, and financial reporting requirements
  • Proven experience managing quality control processes and AICPA peer reviews
  • Strong analytical, problem, solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proven experience in managing/developing accounting and auditing teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to interact effectively with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Proficiency in accounting/auditing software and Microsoft Office products
