Position Description
Wellington is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking, and student-centered math teacher. The successful candidate will have a love and passion for working with middle schoolers and supporting both their academic and social-emotional development. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to operate effectively in diverse environments, interact successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds, and employ culturally responsive pedagogy to create an inclusive and equitable classroom community. This position involves teaching four sections of math in the middle school (grades 5 through 8), serving as an advisor to middle school students, teaching an elective class in our signature Dive Program, and contributing to a professional culture of care, collaboration, creativity, and collegiality.
The math curriculum at Wellington focuses on building a strong mathematical foundation while cultivating problem-solving, collaboration, and perseverance. Students are encouraged to go beyond finding the right answer to justifying their process and exploring multiple pathways to solutions. Foundational concepts in algebra and geometry meet hands-on activities and relevant problems that engage students in authentic, real-world learning and opportunities for interdisciplinary connections. Students engage with modern mathematical concepts such as financial literary, statistics, entrepreneurialism, design thinking, logical analysis, transferability and adaptability, and coding literacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging and innovative instruction in mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra, and/or geometry) at the middle school level.
- Serve as advisor to 10-15 middle school students and contribute to a grade-level team.
- Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers of students and advisees to keep them aware of student progress.
- Recognize and implement diverse teaching strategies and assessment methods that foster collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Actively participate in the school community, collaborating with colleagues and contributing to a positive and dynamic academic environment.
- Pursue and engage in ongoing professional development opportunities aligned with the school's mission and goals.
Requirements
Position Requirements
- Passion and enthusiasm for working with middle school students, with an emphasis on care, advocacy, and relationship building.
- Experience in the classroom teaching math to middle school students.
- Understanding of child development and educational needs for students in grades 5 through 8.
- Bachelor's and/or master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in
- cultural competency in teaching practices.
- creating a positive and inclusive classroom culture in which students feel safe and supported.
- differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
- assessing and documenting student growth through observations, record-keeping, and various formal assessments.
- planning and implementing an integrated curriculum using informed and innovative approaches.
