Employment Status: Full Time

FLSA Status: Exempt | Non-Bargaining Unit

Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week (schedule includes daytime, evening and weekend hours)

Job Objective

To promote the mission and values of the Greene County Public Library. To carry out objectives and goals of the strategic plan to better serve the community. To serve as the head of the department of local history and genealogy.  To manage departmental operations and supervise staff; evaluate materials in the collection; plan and provide services and programming as it relates to local history for the community.

Requirements

Essential Job Functions

 

  • Manages operations, service, and programming for the Greene County Room. 

 

  • Plans, designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates local history programs and services.

 

  • Interviews, selects and trains new employees; trains and makes assignments to subordinates; assists in the evaluation of their performance; Conducts staff meetings to transmit information about policies and procedures.

 

  • Assists in developing the Greene County Room collection through:  (1) analyzing and evaluating the collection’s strengths and weaknesses (2) selecting materials for removal from the collection (3) identifying community information needs and selecting materials to meet those needs.

 

  • Develops workflows and manages processes for digital collections.  This includes developing protocols to ensure ease of access and search ability for patrons.  Creates and enters metadata adhering to industry standards and quality controls.

 

  • Answers reference and reader's advisory questions from the public and conducts necessary research using various media, both print and digital.

 

  • Plans and/or prepares displays, bulletin boards, bibliographies, and other informational materials.

 

  • Instructs and aids adults, young adults, children and community groups in use of library and of reference  tools; provides both one-to-one assistance and group presentations.

 

  • Selects, trains and supervises volunteers.

 

  • Accepts donations of materials and monies, collects copy monies.

 

  • Maintains visibility of the Greene County Room with the public and governmental units, serves as a consultant to outside groups as needed.

 

  • Gathers statistics, prepares reports, and completes other projects as assigned.

 

  • Develops program and budget plan for the Greene County Room for consideration.  Responsible for facilitating the approved plan.

 

  • Attends Adult Services Council, and serves on related committees as needed.

 

  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance and participation in conferences and workshops and through programs of continuing education, professional reading, and participation in professional groups.

 

  • Keeps abreast of information by regularly reading email, minutes, the staff website and by attending staff meetings.

  • Reliable predictable attendance.

 

·         The supervisor may require other related duties.  These duties are nonessential functions of this position.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

  • Ability to maintain good relations with the public and other staff, individually and in general, shows tact and courtesy.

 

  • Working knowledge of digital asset management system, adhering to standard protocols for metadata creation.

 

  • Proven knowledge of computer applications for libraries, including use of mobile apps and devices and ability to instruct patrons on their use; ability to trouble shoot basic computer issues and other related equipment.

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of reader’s advisory and the reference interview.

 

  • Ability to communicate clearly; listen, understand, speak, and write effectively.

 

·         Ability to handle routine problems and keep supervisor informed of departmental needs and concerns.

 

 Qualifications

 

  • ·         Master of Public History or Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school.

 

  • ·         3-4 years of public history and/or genealogy experience in a public service environment.

 

  • ·         Supervisory experience preferred.

 

 Environmental Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office-like setting, but with need for considerable mobility: light lifting, bending, stooping, stretching and sitting at a variety of desks and service points.
  • Employee may be scheduled to work evening and weekend hours, including Sundays; schedules may be altered depending on the needs of the library.
