What You Will Do:
- Direct the US underwriting strategy, process, planning, reporting, forecasting, business development and innovation for the insurance book of business
- Drive underwriting portfolio growth and profitability in a manner that is consistent with Relm’s risk appetite to ensure annual goals are achieved
- Provide a professional layer of leadership, mentorship, and management to the US underwriting team, fostering a high-performance culture and promoting continued growth, training and development of junior underwriting and administrative staff
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and industry stakeholders to enhance market presence and drive business growth.
- Attend and occasionally present at industry conferences, as needed and as the opportunity presents itself
- Collaborate with colleagues to achieve company goals and drive cross-sell opportunities
- Assist with strategic underwriting planning by developing and maintaining suitable management information to effectively evaluate the portfolio
- Maintain compliance with all internal and external underwriting and regulatory guidelines, standards, and legal requirements
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks to inform underwriting decisions and strategy
- Engage in ad-hoc projects and tasks as assigned to contribute to the continuous improvement and growth of Relm
Requirements
- Minimum of 12 years of US insurance underwriting and/or broking experience (Financial Lines, Professional Lines, Cyber, Casualty and/or Property insurance experience would be an asset)
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, insurance, actuarial science, computer science, or a related discipline; advanced degrees are a plus.
- Strong relationships with US wholesale and retail brokers.
- Comprehensive understanding of US insurance compliance requirements and business engagement best practices.
- Proven national-level leadership experience with a track record of successfully leading and developing high-performing underwriting teams.
- Extensive experience in negotiating, preparing, and drafting policy and endorsement wording.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex risks and develop innovative solutions.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- Creative problem-solver with strong critical thinking skills and a diligent approach to accomplishing tasks.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
- Confident communicator who can clearly and authentically convey messages both in writing and verbally, skillfully persuade, and constructively argue.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (familiarity with Mac OS is a plus).
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with comfort in leading client and broker meetings.
- Exceptional attention to detail and work ethic.
- Willingness to work outside core hours and travel overseas as required.
Nice To Have Qualifications, Skills, And Experience:
- Experience managing and underwriting a predominately primary book of business
- The ability to perform data analytics within MS Excel or Power BI, including functions such as Tables, Pivot Tables, formulae (VLOOKUP, IF, SUM) etc.
- Professional designation in insurance underwriting, such as RPLU, CPCU, ACII, AU, or similar
- Strong interest and conceptual comprehension in Web3., Digital Assets, Blockchain, Cannabis, AI, or Financial Markets will be a differentiator.
