About the role

Steer North America is looking for an experienced, motivated, self-starting, problem-solver and collaborative professional to fill our Principal Consultant, Commercial Advisory position. This person will be working in our Infrastructure team in support of commercial, financial and economic related work, which has contributed to our company’s ongoing success in the United States, Canada, and beyond.

This person will be a contributing member of Steer’s North American/International teams which is comprised of planners, engineers, economists, designers, financial modellers and technical specialists. In combination, these disciplines provide us with the breadth and depth to deliver integrated and innovative solutions to our many clients.

Our Commercial Advisory team brings together a mix of international experts from both the private and public sectors. We combine our understanding of people, context and function to deliver innovative solutions which helps to make our cities, transport systems and public places understandable, accessible and enjoyable for all.

The Principal Consultant - Commercial Advisory will:

  • Work alongside colleagues to conceptualize, develop, and deliver on new and pre-existing client projects
  • Manage work conducted by other team members to budget and quality expectations
  • Support Steer’s Infrastructure practice via client engagement and proposal development
  • Mentor and manage the development of early career professionals

The Principal Consultant - Commercial Advisory will work in a demanding and enjoyable environment across projects in the on rail, transit, highway, airport and new mobility modes and provide wider support to our business in the design and implementation of feasibility, commercial and P3 procurement reports and documents for a wide range of Steer’s projects and clients.

About the candidate

The ideal candidate for this role has:

  • Over five years experience in the transportation or public infrastructure sector, through consultancy and/or public sector;
  • Successfully led or had a senior role on transportation modelling and other projects, in particular those in the rail/transit, toll road or aviation sectors;
  • Proven experience with building and overseeing business and financial models commonly used in the transportation industry with robust outputs including forecasts, estimates and technical notes;
  • Ability to explain complicated concepts clearly and succinctly;
  • The ability to work autonomously yet in collaboration with other colleagues and our clients;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
  • An existing right to work in the United States or Canada;

Compensation

The salary range for all applicants are $90,000 to $120,000 USD.

Do be advised that this is an estimated benchmark salary of good faith for the States of New York, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C. All compensation, regardless of location, may be subject to change as skills, abilities, internal equity and geographic location are taken into account.

In addition to base salary, all employees will be eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus. Please review the benefits section for more information on total reward.

Steer reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional compensation.

Requirements

Requirements

The preferred candidate for this role will possess some or all of the following attributes:

  • 5+ years relevant experience in transportation or public infrastructure sector, through consultancy and/or public sector
  • Strong knowledge of spreadsheet models (Excel VBA) and statistical analysis
  • Experience with building complex spreadsheet models and managing a team delivering these models and other commercial related analysis (such as performance, financial KPIs and risk assessments) to fit a client’s needs and expectations
  • Experience developing successful bids/proposals
  • An ability to take initiative and work independently
  • An ability to delegate, learn quickly and find enjoyment through the development of new skills
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and ability to effectively prioritize workloads and meet strict deadlines
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future

Additional skills of merit include:

  • Relevant technical experience beyond financial and economic modeling (e.g. demand, operations, capital planning, service planning, etc.)
  • Post-graduate qualification in economics, business or data analysis
  • Proficiency in languages of countries where Steer conducts business (especially Spanish or French), would be advantageous but are not required.

For positions in the US, we offer a competitive package of benefits including private medical, dental, and vision insurance, commuter benefits, a group Share Incentive Plan, a 3% 401k contribution and a discretionary yearly bonus based on annual compensation (dependent upon individual and company performance).

Additionally, we offer up to 44 paid days off - 20 vacation days, 9 public holidays, 3 floating holidays, 10 sick days, and 2 volunteering days – as well as a bi-annual performance review process.
