Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Managing Director to oversee our pipeline of HCZ programs, which include our K-8 Afterschool and summer programs (Peacemakers and A Cut Above), the high school programs (ACE, ETC, CCCC), the Academic Support Unit (tutoring), and Healthy Harlem.
The Managing Director will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The Managing Director will be charged with overseeing all aspects of program management with the objective of ensuring our best-in-class program consistently achieves and exceeds established goals designed to meet the needs of the children and families we serve. The Managing Director will work closely with Senior leaders to execute our strategic plan, provide top-level management support and leadership to a team of program managing directors, and will be a key presenter externally to champion HCZ’s model and work as it relates to our sustained impact at scale and beyond Harlem.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education, Social Services, or closely related field
- Nonprofit management or other related experience with significant experience leading academic and enrichment-based youth development programming at multiple levels
- Must be available to work flexible hours (after hours, weekends, holidays, etc.)

- Exceptional leadership and emotional intelligence, with the proven ability to coach, develop, and lead talent
- Have a demonstrated track record of effective problem-solving and prudent decision-making
- Strong project management skills with the ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize workload, and effectively manage resources
- Maintain a relentless pursuit of results and very high standards for performance of themselves and colleagues
- Superior analytical and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Resourcefulness, creativity and strong problem-solving skills
- Has perspective on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion, particularly as it relates to management practices and our work within underserved communities of color
- Must be able to handle confidential and sensitive information with tact and integrity
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
What you'll do
Program Management
- Provide top-level management for our best-in-class youth development programming
- Design and implement strategies to enhance college and career readiness throughout entire pipeline of programs
- Integrate health and wellness supports throughout all programs to effectively serve the whole child
- Leverage data and learning to inform program design and execution
- Review program budgets and staffing to ensure that they are in aligned with the organization’s vision and strategic plan
Strategy & Innovation
- Ensure successful execution of programmatic innovations outlined in the strategic plan, which include College & Career Readiness, Wellness & Mental Health, Community & Family Partnerships, and Healthy Harlem
- Contribute to the development of HCZ’s strategic goals and objectives, as well as overall management and leadership
- Assess and recommend new areas for program development
People Management
- Directly oversee program portfolio Directors
- Recruit, develop and retain high quality program staff
- Establish, build and maintain relationships within the organization and community to ensure that HCZ is consistently meeting the needs of children, families and the community
- Foster strong relationships and effective communication with HCZ senior leadership and staff
