With a focus on teaching diverse learners, you will create an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued and supported in their academic growth. Drawing on your experience and expertise, you will design engaging and differentiated instruction to enhance students' reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and communication skills. This position requires a deep understanding of English language arts, a commitment to student success, and a passion for fostering a culture of lifelong learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement rigorous and engaging lesson plans aligned with New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts (NJSLS-ELA), covering literature, writing, language, and speaking/listening skills.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, interests, and abilities of students, including English language learners (ELLs), students with disabilities, and advanced learners.
  • Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, texts, media, and technology tools to promote active learning, critical thinking, and meaningful connections to real-world contexts.
  • Foster a culture of reading by selecting diverse and culturally relevant texts that reflect students' backgrounds, interests, and experiences.
  • Implement research-based strategies to improve students' reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary analysis skills.
  • Provide explicit instruction in writing processes, grammar, mechanics, and rhetorical techniques, and guide students through the writing process from brainstorming to revision and editing.
  • Administer formative and summative assessments to evaluate students' reading and writing skills, analyze learning gaps, and inform instructional decision-making.
  • Use assessment data to track student progress, set individualized learning goals, and provide targeted feedback and support to students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and instructional support staff to develop and implement interventions for struggling readers and writers, including literacy interventions and accommodations.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect, collaboration, and a growth mindset among students.
  • Implement proactive strategies for classroom management, behavior management, and conflict resolution to create a safe and supportive learning community.
  • Provide academic and social-emotional support to students, including mentoring, counseling, and referral to support services as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, academic expectations, and opportunities for parent involvement in their child's education.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians, community organizations, and cultural institutions to promote literacy initiatives, community partnerships, and family engagement in literacy activities.
  • Participate in school events, parent-teacher conferences, and community outreach efforts to build positive relationships with families and stakeholders.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to enhance content knowledge, instructional practices, and cultural competence.
  • Reflect on teaching practices, analyze student learning outcomes, and pursue continuous improvement through self-assessment, collaboration with colleagues, and participation in professional learning communities.
  • Stay current with developments in English language arts education, literacy research, educational technology tools, and best practices for teaching diverse learners.

Skills:

  • Experience teaching English language arts at the high school level, preferably in a diverse urban or suburban setting.
  • Demonstrated success in improving students' reading and writing skills, academic achievement, and standardized test scores.
  • Knowledge of research-based instructional strategies, literacy interventions, and differentiation techniques for diverse learners.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to cultural competence, equity, and inclusion in education.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders.
  • Bi-lingual preferred but not required.
