Full Job Description
The Quality Engineer will be responsible to drive quality, teaching quality techniques, capturing issues, solving problems and promoting quality within the production and service departments. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations occasionally.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for Quality System Maintenance.
- Review, maintain, and prepare Quality trend analysis data and QA reports.
- Perform Root cause analysis, failure analysis, and implementation of corrective action for process related concerns, customer returns, and customer complaints.
- Assist production and engineering managers in establishing, implementing and maintaining inspection and acceptance criteria at the component, subassembly, and final assembly levels.
- Responsible for continual improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as 5S, Kaizen, lean methods, etc.
- Train and collaborate with production personnel to continue improving on existing quality awareness.
- Collaborate with the RMA and Service departments to inspect, and disposition customer returns and other items returning from customers.
- Conduct audits, including preparing and performing audits, creating reports of findings, determining proper corrective and preventive actions and closing out audit findings.
- Create and maintain quality documentation, such as quality manuals, procedures, work instructions, and inspection templates.
- Review RFQ’s and Purchase Orders for Quality clauses and requirements.
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.
Requirements
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar position.
Education:
- BS from an accredited college or university.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Basic computer knowledge such as, but not limited to, Microsoft products including Microsoft Dynamics.
- Experience with Quality in a Manufacturing Environment.
- Experience with quality improvement tools and techniques (i.e., Lean, Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control, and Failure Mode & Effects Analysis).
- Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
- Experience using standard measurement equipment (calipers, micrometers, pin, thread gauges, etc.)
- Strong attention to detail.
