Full Job Description

Empowerment Academy Charter School is hiring Elementary School Teacher Assistants/Support Teachers to specifically work with 2nd-4th Graders supporting in specifically Mathematics for the 2024/2025 School Year and beyond! This position is different than a general TA and the candidate should have specific interest or a specific background in either Mathematics or ELA. Candidate may be asked to take a proficiency test in their given content area.

Base Salary SY24/25: $39,500-$49,500

Potential Earnings: $42,000-$53,000 after Bonuses and Stipends.

TEACHER SUPPORTS

Teachers at Empowerment Academy are part of a school-wide team.  They receive career-long coaching and professional development support from school leaders; work with their peers in professional learning communities (PLCs) to plan lessons and solve problems; and partner with an array of specialists to meet scholars’ diverse needs.

Examples of such teacher supports include:

  • Abundant planning periods during the school day;
  • A research-based curriculum and supporting curricular materials; 
  • High-quality formative assessments, aligned with the curriculum, that help identify when students have not achieved mastery of a skill, concept, or knowledge item; and
  • Full-time reading and math specialists who tutor students struggling to master an essential skill, and counselors and social workers who help students struggling with non-academic problems.

Requirements

At minimum:

  • Math Teaching Assistants must hold Substitute Teacher Certification and demonstrated high level Math tutoring skills. A bachelor's degree is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

Teacher Assistants will be responsible for assisting our teachers in their work with our students. They will also assist with student arrival and breakfast in the morning and student dismissal in the afternoon.

Moreover, appreciating the example of excellent schools which succeed at helping all students achieve at a high level, Assistant Teachers must hold high expectations for each student and commit themselves to helping every student achieve their full potential.

Teaching and Assessment - Assistant Teachers will assist our educators as they work to execute the school’s education and character development programs. They will assist with assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities; will provide student support; and will often be asked to teach or tutor a small group of students or even an entire class.  To improve their instructional skills and classroom management, they will frequently be asked to observe master teachers and meet with teaching coaches to gain feedback on their lessons and pedagogy.

Culture and Classroom Management - Assistant Teachers must communicate, and also model for their students, behaviors which befit the high expectations culture and the caring school climate to which we are committed. Under the guidance of the teacher they are assisting, they must apply School and classroom rules consistently and effectively; make use of preventive discipline; and effectively supervise students both in their classroom and elsewhere on School grounds.

Teamwork, Professional Relations, and Professional Development - Assistant Teachers should see themselves as members of a team and should commit themselves to their own and to their peers’ on-going professional development. Assistant Teachers will be required to attend professional development sessions and to participate actively in many school meetings.

Reporting and Staff Relationships  - Assistant Teachers will report to the Teacher to whom they are assigned, who will provide considerable supervision, as will the School’s Principal, Dean of Students and Supervisor of Special Education.

Additional Responsibilities - In addition to the job responsibilities described herein, assistant teachers shall perform services that may be required from time to time as directed by the Head Dean which may include non-instructional services.

Math and ELA Teaching Assistants will be part of a school-wide team that includes many different professionals, but should expect to work particularly closely with the Teachers and Assistant Teachers working at their grade-level.
