General Summary and Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The Sr. Manager, Product Stewardship will be responsible for Product Stewardship process development, leadership and direction ensuring products are safe for their intended use and comply with all regulatory and Company requirements in the markets in which they are sold.

Key Responsibilities to Include:

  • Engage with the Business Leaders and all levels of the organization to ensure strategic and operating plans that effectively deliver product safety and product stewardship compliance while improving overall operating results. 
  • Provide Leadership, Process Development and Direction as needed for product safety and regulatory compliance and substantiation for Spartech finished products.
    • Understand, apply and stay current with regulations related to Hazard Communication (North America, Europe, etc), including regulations related to chemical substances and MSDS and label authoring. Use tools within the SAP to assist with necessary reporting and provide data for various yearly reports which may include SARA, California and NPRI.
    • Develop and maintain SDS for the products Spartech manufactures, non-prime materials, and other manually produced SDS.
    • Support, co-ordinate, and oversee company facilities’ product safety systems and procedures, including plant sanitation / Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), product security measures, etc. 
    • Understand regulations related to the safe transportation of dangerous goods. Stay current with existing regulations and potential legal changes. Review and consult on changes to determine relevance to Spartech operations. Provide information to Business Groups and plants to increase awareness. Work with consultants and law firms.
    • Evaluate compliance with Product Stewardship standards and applicable laws and regulations. Identify and maintain new requirements. Provide information to business units and plants to elevate awareness. Work with consultants and law firms.
    • Provide expertise and assistance to business groups and plants to help maintain compliance in Product Stewardship.  This will include monitoring, product analysis, reporting, and customer communications around products the following key areas:

  • Support New Product Development efforts by establishing controls for raw material and finished product commercialization as they relate to product stewardship compliance and objectives
  • Manage process for identification of regulatory or customer compliance requirements as well as steps necessary to ensure compliance.  Respond to customer and outside agency inquiries on our products to ensure compliance, accurate customer and agency compliance and communication.   
  • Manage the performance, and budget, of outside consultants to ensure that the greatest value is being realized to mitigate liability and risk.
  • Maintain forward looking Product Stewardship leadership by advising company management on appropriate reaction to regulatory changes.  Be prepared to comply with future anticipated regulatory changes as well as customer requirements, consumer trends and business initiatives.
  • Identify and track key performance indicators (KPI) and metrics related to stewardship efforts
  • Establish internal/external communication system to inform stakeholders of current issues, changes to company policy or procedures, sustainability trends, improvement initiatives and metrics monitoring
  • Audit corporate compliance with responsibilities and process at each level of the Product Stewardship process.  Request Operations assistance with non-conformances that do not correct themselves after education/training and business risk assessment.
  • Optimize efficiency and effectiveness of independent GMP audit services, and others, while satisfying customers’ often conflicting requirements regarding choice of audit service providers.
  • Continued education and re-certification, as needed in the stewardship discipline to stay current on changing regulatory requirements and processes. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelors in Product Stewardship, business or scientific discipline or related or equivalent.  Masters degree in business (MBA) or scientific discipline preferred.
  • Minimum four years prior experience with product stewardship, preferably in environment similar to Business.
  • Experience working with various governmental and private agencies on business and production issues, including FDA, OSHA, EPA and their counterparts in Canada, Mexico, European Union, globally as needed as well as third party groups such as UL, NSF, FM Global and other agencies. 
  • Cross Functional, Manufacturing Industry, 7+ years

  • EH&S Legal Compliance, 7+ years

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of product stewardship standards, practices, policies, and regulations, in support of establishment of Process Development and Direction as needed for product safety and regulatory compliance, and substantiation for Business finished products
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies and regulations/legal standards for substantiation for Business finished products (i.e. OSHA, FDA, UL, REACH, etc.)
  • Ability to develop and execute training of employees in regulatory/compliance procedures and regulations
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels and types of internal and external individuals, including key customer communications
  • Solid writing skills, including correspondence, policies, procedures, presentations, reports, etc.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 
  • Ability to travel approximately 20%
