Job Summary: Under the direction of the Center Education Coordinator at the site, this management position is responsible for oversight and assisting in the implementation of effective services to children and families in the Head Start program.  Duties include assisting in the responsibilities for Center operations, policies and procedures, acting as a liaison with parents, staff, internal and external collaborative partners, coordinating day-to-day classroom substitute staffing, and oversight of educational support staff and activities.  This position may require teaching in the classroom, or in the role of any open position.

Scope of Supervision: Teacher, Teacher Assistant, Program Aide 

Essential Functions (Not All Inclusive):

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for supporting Center Education Coordinators with the supervision of center staff, and facilitating internal and external collaborative partners’ involvement to ensure classrooms and center are functioning in accordance with Minnesota Department of Human Services Division of Licensing (Rule 3-Regulations and Guidelines), Head Start Performance Standards, Parent Aware (MN QRIS), and the Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines (CACFP).

  • Responsible for supporting the day-to-day center operations.  Duties include assisting in supporting  operating policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all state, federal and program regulations and requirements.
  • Provide feedback and support to assist teaching staff with professional development goals related to CLASS scores and to support their curriculum fidelity and best practices in the classroom.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the site specific DHS-Rule 3 Regulations and Guidelines (Risk Reduction Plan, Program Plan, and Emergency Procedures and Protocols) annually. Ensure staff are informed of their responsibilities.
  • Assist in administering a system to assess center’s equipment, supply and ground/building maintenance needs and ensure compliance with DHS-Rule 3 Regulations and Head Start Performance Standards. 

Supervision and Administrative Duties:  

  • Mentor, coach and provide work direction for assigned staff. Assist in overseeing work schedules to ensure proper ratios and workloads are managed appropriately. 
  • Utilize the agency's performance management system to provide meaningful performance feedback to assigned staff.  Work closely with staff to establish customized job-related goals and professional development plans. Monitor goals and plans throughout the performance period. 

Administrative and Monitoring Duties: Responsible for ensuring and promoting Parental involvement in all aspects of the Head Start Program. Ensure implementation of curriculum in compliance with established program criteria, and child assessment outcomes are documented and tracked utilizing program databases.

  • Monitor compliance and follow up in completing the required Home Visits, Center Orientation, Parent Teacher conference, Attendance and Child Individual Goals. Ensure staff have entered all required data into the program's database. 
  • Monitor and assist with the Transition Plans for all children in the Head Start program. Plans include children moving from Early Head Start to Head Start, center to center and Head Start to kindergarten.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

Safety: Responsible for conducting all duties in a safe manner.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Associates degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Must meet licensing and Head Start performance standards for a Head Start Center-Based Teacher.
  • One-year of experience in early childhood education or related supervision is required.  Supervisory experience may be substituted with three years of experience teaching in an early childhood classroom.
  • Experience teaching in an early childhood setting is required.
  • Previous Head Start or Early Head Start experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP), Dual Language Learners, MN Early Childhood Indicators of Progress, Head Start Performance Standards, Rule 3 requirements, CLASS tool, Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment Tool, Devereux Early Childhood Assessment, and knowledge of child development preferred. 

Abilities and Skills: In order to be successful in this position, the person will at minimum need to possess the following abilities and skills:

  • Must be culturally competent and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively and respectfully with varied socio-economic and culturally and linguistically diverse groups and/or individuals.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to motivate staff, parents and partners, and mentor, coach and model appropriate practices. 
  • Ability to take initiative and to use good judgment.
  • Must be flexible and a team player.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule with some evening hours.
  • Must be proficient in using a computer including Microsoft for Windows or similar, e-mail and internet.
  • Ability to utilize new technologies such as software and applications as they are introduced to the agency.
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.

Core Technology Competency:  Level 2 - Intermediate 1

Certifications: Must obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire; must maintain certifications.

Driver’s License: Because of the multiple locations of centers, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation on a daily basis is required.

Physical Requirements:

    • Normal office physical exertion required.
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have the stamina to model best practices in the classroom and act appropriately in an emergency situation. 
    • Physically capable of reacting to the demands of active 0-5-year olds. 
    • Must be able to successfully pass the pre-placement Head Start physical exam.

Mental Requirements: This position requires the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks, and the ability to function independently.  Effectively relate and communicate to people of varying multi-ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.  Willing to use team-teaching approach.  Enjoy working with young children. Capable of using good judgment and developmentally age appropriate best practices in daily teaching situations.

Environmental Requirements:  School environment (classroom and playground), office environment, trainings and meetings at various locations within the community.

Starting Salary Range: $55,563-$69,859 Annually

Schedule: M-F, 40 Hours/Week, Regular, Seasonal (9-10 months), Overtime Exempt

Remote Capability: This position has 20% remote capability
