Salary: $105,000-115,000 annually based on experience

Schedule/Location:

  • Full Time, approximately 40 -45 hours/week. Primarily office hours between 7am-5pm Monday - Friday.
  • Location: This is a hybrid position. The person in this position will have the opportunity to work remotely for part of their time, estimated 1+ days in-office per week (Mondays are in office and possible other days). Subject to change as business needs dictate. Must be able to travel between our Twin Cities locations and surrounding area. Must be able to successfully work remotely. Initial training period may include more days in the office. Access to reliable internet, ability to prioritize work independently, and foster relationships while working in a hybrid (remote and in-person) environment required. Must live in or have easy access to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This role's main office is our Woodbury, MN location.

Job Summary: 

The Accounting Manager is responsible for supervising the accounting staff and financial operations. This position’s key responsibilities include managing financial records, overseeing payroll and accounts payable, budgeting, audits, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. This role requires a deep understanding of fundamental accounting principles, the ability to think analytically and complete work that is subject to strict deadlines while balancing shifting priorities.

Essential Functions:

Accounting Functions:

  • Compile and analyze financial information for journal entry preparation.
  • Complete financial statements through preliminary results and provide analysis of results to management.
  • Update monthly balance sheet reconciliations and interpret results, recommending adjusting entries where needed.
  • Complete external audits and preparation of work papers for financial results, 401(k) plan, and workers compensation coverage.
  • Establish and maintain proper accounting methods, policies, procedures, and principles.
  • Ensure the organization’s financial operations run smoothly and align with business goals and legal requirements.
  • Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with development of budget and forecast models to support the long term, strategic financial planning of the organization.
  • Oversee payroll and accounts payable processing ensuring that proper processes are being followed.

Leadership:

  • Provide supervision, coaching, and development to direct reports as noted on the organizational chart, acknowledging accomplishments and providing regular feedback.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with direct reports to ensure team members have the resources and support to be successful.
  • Address and resolve any issues or conflicts within the team.
  • Review and approve timecards and requested time off within payroll deadlines, working closely with employees to resolve discrepancies.
  • Manage budgets and complete revenue/expense reports as required by Finance.

Communication and Culture:

  • Communicate financial information as appropriate to multiple management levels. 
  • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, other employees, and volunteers.
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to make AHS a welcoming environment for all.

Technology:

  • Utilize financial software for accounting operations, accurate record keeping and generating reports.
  • Monitor AHS email and other messaging software.

Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information Regarding Schedule and Attendance:

  • Regular, predictable attendance, punctuality, and availability to work during operational hours.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings, leadership meetings, all-staff meetings, and one-on-one meetings with direct leader.
  • May be required to work at a different site based on department needs.
  • May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office/desk based.
  • Adjacent animal shelter areas may be humid, noisy, or odorous.

Requirements

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 4+ years of leadership experience in accounting required.
  • Payroll experience preferred.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and motivate the team.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and process management skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate as needed.
  • Proficient with computers, specifically a working knowledge of Microsoft products.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged sitting at a desk.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.

Emotional Demands:

  • Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of humane euthanasia.

Transportation:

  • Reliable transportation required.
