JCC Greater Boston is seeking a tennis camp counselor. The Tennis Camp Counselor provides hands-on support within this skills development camp under the guidance of the Tennis Pro. This position provides personalized instruction and guidance to our campers, who will learn the fundamental techniques of tennis, including proper grip, footwork, stroke production, and game strategy. As part of this dynamic team, the successful candidate will enhance each camper’s tennis skills. He/She/They will also work alongside other camp counselors to ensure a safe and fun environment for the campers. A Tennis camp counselor doesn’t need to have strong tennis skills or be an experienced tennis player. He/She/They must like children and be willing to guide them through a carefully designed program, boosting confidence and tennis skills. The full season is June 17- August 19, 40 hours per week. While we prefer candidates who are available all summer, we have the option for candidates to work one week or more. The camp day is 8:30 AM – 4 PM, Monday through Friday.

This position will pay in the range of $15 - $18 an hour as a starting salary. The salary offered will ultimately be determined by the hours the employee will work, the scope of the position, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity. Additionally, we offer complimentary access to the JCC Greater Boston facility in Newton – offering indoor swimming, classes, and workout facilities.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Tennis Pro, effectively teach the fundamental techniques of tennis, including proper grip, footwork, stroke production, and game strategy:

  • Provide instruction to meet the needs of each individual camper; executing the individual plan for instruction and goals for each camper
  • Build camper’s confidence, skills, and love of tennis
  • Create and facilitate a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive
  • As a camp counselor, be a positive and encouraging supervisor of the campers both on and off the court
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of campers in structured and unstructured time
  • Consistently enforce the rules and regulations of the JCC Sports Camp program, including those applicable to the tennis courts and pool
  • Set up and break down tennis equipment
  • Provide oversight of campers and their activities when in program attendance (on and off the court)

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Tennis camp counselors do not need to be experienced tennis players. General knowledge in tennis and 1-year general coaching experience or camp counseling experience preferred. Must display an ability to work well with children and be able to work under the direction of the Tennis Pro; willingness to learn and accept guidance and feedback is a must. 

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.
  • Camp licensing regulations require that staff be 16 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • Must have current certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or is able to become certified within 14 days of hire

Skills and Abilities:

Has leadership skills, including teamwork, patience, flexibility, and diplomacy. Able to demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Displays a record of  building strong relationships with customers in an instructional, service-oriented, customer-centric capacity, as well as with co-workers and with leadership
  • Has a history of  strong team orientation
  • Is able and willing to follow directions from supervisors and follow protocols

Physical Requirements:  Able to work well in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Able to lift and carry sports equipment. This position requires being present in a full-time capacity during scheduled weeks (up to 8 weeks) in the Season.
