Full Job Description
The Senior Geochemist will work primarily in a team-based laboratory environment investigating geochemical processes occurring during water/rock reactions in rock fracture networks. The reaction networks will have direct relevance to the mining-, geothermal- geologic H2-, and CO2 sequestration industries. The individual will lead the geochemistry design and execution of our laboratory and field-scale investigations, and collaborate with other geochemists, rock-mechanics and pulse-power engineers on rock fracturing and reactivity projects for geologic carbon storage, geologic H2 production and in-situ mineral recovery from geologic formations. The Senior Geochemist will be involved with the general R&D efforts of the Company, and will also assist in preparing and/or leading proposals and grants for US and international private and public funding opportunities.
The Senior Geochemist will assume many of the following responsibilities, depending upon prior experience:
● Take an active role in the design and execution of laboratory investigations optimizing geochemical processes related to CO2 sequestration, geological H2, and mineral extraction;
● Investigation of complex electro-chemical reactions under reservoir conditions;
● Development and execution of field-scale geochemical sampling programs;
● Collection and analysis of geochemical samples from reactors, core-flood experiments and field sites;
● Analysis and interpretation of large, multivariate geochemical datasets pertaining to geothermal and mining environments;
● Investigation of the effects of mineral dissolution and precipitation on reservoir permeability and porosity at HPHT conditions;
● Prepare and present project updates, technical presentations and reports for team-members, clients, industry, and academic partners;
● Prepare governmental reports, funding proposals, research papers, presentations, etc.
● Organization of project meetings and documentation of procedures, data and inventions.
Requirements
The Senior Geochemist will have the minimum qualifications:
● PhD in geochemistry/geoscience/geological engineering or related field;
● Minimum 4 years of geochemical laboratory experience;
● Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to make technically sound recommendations with incomplete information;
● Prior preparation of successful proposals, publications or patents;
● Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
The following qualifications are preferred:
● 4+ years field experience in oil & gas, geothermal, hydrogen, CO2 and/or mining applications of geochemical data
● Prior experience working with a scientific team and/or providing mentorship
● Research experience in fluid-fluid, fluid-mineral and fluid-rock interactions;
● Experience as a principal or co-principal investigator for external project funding;
● Aqueous geochemical analyses (e.g. IC, ICP-OES, ICP-MS), gas chemistry analyses (e.g. GC, GC-MS) and field chemical analysis with handheld sensors and instruments;
● Rock characterization such as fracture imaging (XCT), chemical imaging, mineral microanalyses (e.g., EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, Raman spectroscopy,), whole-rock (e.g., XRD, ICP-OES-60 and WDXRF), and microscopy (e.g., FE-SEM, cathodoluminescence, reflected-light microscopy, and transmitted-light microscopy);
● Design and set-up of water/rock reaction experiments, including at high pressure and temperature and extraction of reacted fluids and gases.
● Design and set-up of core-flooding experiments, including at high pressure and temperature and extraction of reacted fluids and gases.
● Experience with HPHT triaxial cells conducting reactive transport tests, core flooding, or permeability investigations.
● Experience with geochemical-, and/or reactive transport modeling;
● Development and execution of field-scale sampling programs such as sampling well fluids for aqueous geochemical species and dissolved gas analyses;
● Research experience in mafic and ultramafic petrology and ore petrogenesis;
● Experience in electro-chemistry;
● Familiarity with experimental design, setup fabrication and troubleshooting;
● Experience with sensors, electronic data acquisition- and control, and data logging systems;
● Experience with CO2 sequestration and mineralization applications, in-situ mining, and/or geological H2;
● Familiarity with Lab Safety and EHS protocols;
● Good/Advanced programming skills in Matlab/Python/R. LabView and C++ are a bonus.
