Position Summary
Editas Medicine is seeking a highly motivated, energetic and collaborative scientist to join our DMPK, Nonclinical Safety and Translational Sciences team (DSTS). In this highly technical role, the successful individual will apply histology and imaging knowledge to support both preclinical and clinical programs at Editas. This individual will be responsible for contributing to our scientific strategy, designing preclinical studies, establishing new capabilities in-house as well as working with contract research organizations (CROs) when appropriate to support our gene editing programs. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, a broad understanding of drug discovery and development, strong foundational knowledge and ability to work collaboratively with key partners in a matrix team structure. In addition, the candidate should possess qualities such as creative and independent thinking, a positive and team-centered attitude, and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Prior experience with lipid nanoparticle based (LNP) delivery systems and nucleic acid therapeutics is a plus. The individual in this role will have the opportunity to interact with the discovery/platform team as well as the clinical team, to bring life changing therapies to patients with genetic disorders.
Key Responsibilities:
- As the Scientist/Senior Scientist Histology and Imaging, you will be responsible for:
- Independently design, execute, and analyze histopathological experiments (i.e. H&E, IHC, IF, multiplex staining, ISH and other tissue section-based assays) manually and/or with automation.
- Advise and assist with tissue collection and preparation methods to support the planned analyses.
- Develop, trouble shoot and optimize assays, and bring new technologies in-house to support various projects.
- Collaborate as part of a cross-functional team on multiple parallel projects to develop tissue-based assays to support target identification, mechanisms of action, pharmacodynamic and efficacy readouts, toxicity, and biomarker development.
- Collect imaging datasets using automated whole slide scanners and/or confocal or fluorescence microscopy. Manage instruments and data management systems.
- Perform imaging analysis using slide scanner software, HALO, or other quantitative image analysis software.
- Interpret results, write up reports, and present data within the organization and at conferences.
- Responsible for CRO management for activities aligned with the Imaging work.
- Maintain records including electronic lab notebook.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- PhD with 2+ years Or Master’s with 5+ years of relevant experience, preferably in an industry setting
- Prior experience in setting up histology lab.
- Core expertise in histology, the development and validation of histology-based assays and techniques including H&E, IHC, IF, multiplex staining and ISH.
- Must have experience with major tissues from rodent and non-rodent species.
- Must have experience with automatic staining machines and scanners, imaging systems, and image analysis software.
- Experience with gene editing or gene delivery technologies and lipid nanoparticle delivery is highly desired.
- Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral, and an ability to work in a team-oriented, multidisciplinary environment.
- Desirable personal attributes including strong organization skills and attention to detail.
- Experience mentoring research associates.
- Proven track record of collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet shared objectives.
