The Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF) owns, protects, and stewards over 9,000 acres of land and coastal shoreline on Nantucket Island, MA, conserves the island’s rare and significant natural resources, and engages in impactful ecological research to inform resource management and further our knowledge of Nantucket’s unique ecosystems and species. Position Summary
The Restoration and Stewardship Project Manager oversees a diverse array of stewardship and restoration projects on NCF-owned properties and associated waterbodies. Project management includes implementation, contractor oversight, organization of logistics, field implementation and permit oversight. Projects include but are not limited to pond water quality monitoring and management, invasive plant species removal and management, and associated permit application and oversight. This work requires coordination with multiple staff across NCF departments, partner organizations and outside contractors/consultants. The position is approximately 60% field work and 40% office work, with more field-based work during the spring, summer and fall and office-based work during the winter.
The Restoration and Stewardship Project Manager will participate as an active team member in NCF’s Department of Ecological Research, Stewardship and Restoration, providing input and feedback on collaborative project prioritization, planning, implementation, and identification of necessary resources to achieve the department’s overall goals and objectives. They will coordinate directly with Land Management Department staff on cross-departmental projects. Excellent organizational skills and an ability to work both independently and as a team member are required for this position.
Specific Responsibilities:
· Independent planning and implementation of field work, data collection and reporting related to restoration and stewardship projects.
· Direct management of freshwater pond water quality monitoring and improvement/nutrient reduction projects.
· Direct oversight of all invasive plant species management on NCF properties, including population mapping, herbicide treatment, hand digging, pulling etc. Herbicide treatment will require a MA commercial pesticide applicator license.
· Direct oversight and logistical management of contractors hired to manage a variety of larger or specialized restoration and stewardship projects on NCF properties.
· Oversight of all environmental permitting required for restoration and stewardship projects (including submissions, attending meetings, required annual reporting, tracking expiration dates, meeting required deadlines and requesting extensions), working with hired consultants when needed.
· Maintaining and updating NCF’s ArcGIS/ArcPro database, creating maps in ArcGIS and/or Google Earth.
· Providing training, oversight, mentoring and logistical support when seasonal staff and/or volunteers are needed to assist with field work.
· Participation in field work associated with NCF’s Wildlife, Botany and Coastal Ecology Program projects when needed.
Additional office-based and organization-wide responsibilities include:
· Assistance in the development of habitat management plans necessary for specific projects, as needed.
· Participation in NCF’s interpretive education programs related to projects to promote NCF’s mission, strategic priorities, and conservation programs.
· Participation in other NCF outreach and fundraising events.
· Content contribution to NCF’s newsletters, social media, etc. as appropriate.
Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, ecological restoration, or a related subject and multiple years of relevant work experience.
· Proficiency with ArcGIS (ArcMap and ArcPro) and experience with database management, map making, and the use of GPS units to navigate and collect data in the field.
· Familiarity with plant and wildlife identification.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
· Must be teamwork oriented and capable of working with numerous colleagues to efficiently execute projects.
· Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and schedule multiple projects.
· Current Massachusetts Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License, or willingness to acquire.
· Familiarity with (or willingness to learn) Massachusetts environmental regulations and related agencies (Conservation Commission, Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program, DEP, etc.).
· Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
· Valid driver’s license with experience driving SUVs and pickup trucks required.
· Mechanical skills and proficiency with small manual and motorized tools desirable.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This is a field work intensive position and applicants must be able to tolerate adverse field conditions. Field work includes the possibility for inclement weather and variable terrain, poison ivy and biting insects (mosquitoes, deer ticks). Nantucket is an area with a high incidence of tick-borne disease so precautions to minimize risk are encouraged. The work involves hiking, standing, bending, kneeling, and hauling field gear on a regular basis.
Dates/Hours
This is a full-time, year-round position beginning in early-mid April 2025; exact dates are somewhat flexible. Hours are 40 hours a week with daily hours variable depending on particular projects: early-morning and late-night fieldwork may be required depending on project, weather, tides, etc. Weekend work will be required for certain field projects and non-profit events.

Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience and ranges from $56,160 - $62,400 based on a 40-hour work week. Housing is provided in a shared, employee house at an adjusted rate -- salary is negotiable if housing is not needed. Work-related transportation is provided during working hours.
