Full Job Description
The U.S. Center of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) seeks a talented GIS Map Developer & Data Manager intern to join the Equitable Transitions program. In this role, you will focus on creating and managing geographic information system (GIS) maps while also overseeing data management processes. You will collaborate closely with project teams to develop visually appealing and informative maps that effectively communicate spatial data insights. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining and organizing GIS datasets to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and usability.
We are looking to hire a student to work between 30-40 hours a week during the 2024 summer, with potential for extension into the fall, contingent on availability of funding. Interns at our organization have the chance to learn invaluable problem-solving skills, conduct wide-ranging research, and enhance their analytical abilities. Moreover, interns will be able to pursue and cultivate their own projects in their respective areas of interest, with the full support and guidance of our team.
Responsibilities
- Develop high-quality GIS maps for various projects and initiatives
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand map requirements, design specifications, and data visualization needs.
- Utilize GIS software (e.g., primarily GeoNode but also ArcGIS, QGIS) and mapping libraries (e.g., Leaflet, Mapbox) to create visually appealing and informative maps that effectively communicate spatial data insights.
- Conduct spatial analysis and cartographic design to enhance map visualizations and convey meaningful information to end-users.
- Manage GIS datasets, including data acquisition, processing, quality assurance, and documentation.
- Organize and maintain spatial databases, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and accessibility for internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop and implement data management workflows and best practices to optimize data storage, retrieval, and sharing processes.
- Provide technical support and training to end-users on GIS mapping tools, techniques, and data management practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate GIS maps and spatial data into various applications and platforms.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g. QGIS) and mapping libraries (e.g., Leaflet, Mapbox).
- Strong understanding of cartographic principles, spatial analysis techniques, and data visualization best practices.
- Experience with data management processes, particularly including data acquisition, processing, quality assurance, and metadata management, and documentation.
- Familiarity with spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle Spatial) and diverse data formats (e.g., Shapefile, GeoJSON, Tiff, img).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of web development languages (e.g., HTML, JavaScript) and geospatial web services (e.g., WMS, WFS) is a plus.
