Daily Table is a nonprofit grocery store chain with a mission to make healthy food affordable to all. Since 2015, Daily Table has offered customers a wide selection of fresh produce, grocery staples and made-from-scratch meals priced to be truly affordable for all budgets in an upbeat, welcoming shopping environment. Daily Table currently operates five stores across three cities, Boston, Cambridge, and Salem.
Daily Table is looking for an entrepreneurial, food-savvy professional to lead the organization’s procurement and logistics teams and to help evolve the sourcing strategy to position the organization for scale. Daily Table has a dynamic supply chain like no other which presents unique challenges as well as great opportunities to deliver on our critically important mission of making healthy food affordable to all. The right candidate will have a strong bias for action and be driven by “the thrill of the hunt” while also having strong analytical rigor and discipline. The right candidate will be creative and adaptable, managing a nontraditional pricing strategy, managing multiple functional areas within the procurement function, and eager to proactively build relationships with vendors. The Director of Procurement will oversee all food purchasing for the retail and kitchen teams as well as coordinate logistics for internal trucking. This role oversees a team of 8 with 3 direct reports and will report to the CEO.
Roles & Responsibilities
Team Leadership
- Ensure that all team members have clear direction and are focused on meeting meet strategic and operational goals; provide guidance and feedback to team members to course correct and refine strategy
- Support the growth and learning of both procurement and logistics teams
- Motivate and inspire each member of the procurement team to be constantly hunting for great values that deliver on mission for our customers
Product Sourcing and Supplier Management
- Implement and evolve current sourcing strategy to ensure Daily Table leads with low-cost, healthy food while continuously focusing on lowering overall cost of goods
- Lead the procurement team in sourcing all food for our retail stores and commissary kitchen
- Establish/maintain regular programs that provide our customers with everyday staples at incredible prices
- Aggressively pursue relationships with suppliers that will increase the volume of high quality donated and discounted food in order to offer “treasure hunt” opportunities and decrease COGS
- Establish and maintain best practices and process for vendor relationship cultivation and management and other procurement functions
Continuous Improvement
- Establish and maintain regular cycles of program review to ensure that the organization is rigorously evaluating product performance and responding based on customer demands and organizational effectiveness
- Monitor gross margin for each category/product, addressing deviations from projected margin
- Work across the organization to support each department and develop relationships and information flows to ensure the procurement team is in sync with the rest of the organization
Logistics Management
- Supervise and coach logistics manager, who leads a team of five drivers
- Ensure that internal logistics are well organized and product is moved to the right place at the right time
- Evaluate routes and schedules to continually improve efficiency and evaluate tradeoffs of keeping routes in-house or outsourcing delivery to vendors and/or logistics partners
Requirements
Desired Background & Experience & Interests
- Passionate about Daily Table’s mission and is committed to affordable nutrition for all
- 5+ years of experience in procurement, program/category management, or similar area in the food industry
- 3+ years of management/team leadership
- Extremely self-motivated; is always looking to build the next opportunity and relationship
- Strong leadership and management skills; demonstrated ability to achieve great results through the coaching of others
- Excellent interpersonal skills; given our model, it is critical that supplier relationships are actively managed and nurtured. This role is expected to be a key member of the internal leadership team and building effective cross-functional relationships is essential.
- Entrepreneurial mindset; comfortable with ambiguity and change in a early-stage environment
- Strong analytical skills; very comfortable with spreadsheets and making data-driven decisions
- Agile, learns quickly and comfortable with change and new ways of doing things
Benefits
Salary: $110,000 -125,000 annually depending on experience
